Daniel James Brown is an American narrative nonfiction author whose work centers on history, survival, war, and overlooked lives. He is best known for The Boys in the Boat, a #1 New York Times bestseller, and also wrote The Indifferent Stars Above, Under a Flaming Sky, and Facing the Mountain.
Daniel James Brown is an American narrative nonfiction writer whose work is rooted in historical recovery rather than literary fashion. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied at Diablo Valley College, the University of California, Berkeley, and UCLA. Before becoming a full-time author, he taught writing at San Jose State University and Stanford, then worked as a technical writer and editor. That movement between teaching, research, and applied writing became one of the formative turns in his career: it gave him both a historian’s patience and an editor’s discipline. Another turning point came through family memory. In writing Under a Flaming Sky, his first book, he returned to the 1894 Hinckley firestorm that had touched his own family history, establishing a pattern that would define his later work: large historical events rendered through intimate human stories. Brown has said that his central aim is to bring compelling historical events to life as vividly and accurately as he can. ((https://www.danieljamesbrown.com/about/))
