Daniel Coyle is an American journalist and nonfiction author who writes about talent development, teamwork, and organizational culture. He is best known for The Talent Code, The Little Book of Talent, and The Culture Code, books that popularized practical ideas about skill-building and high-performing groups among business, sports, and education audiences.
Daniel Coyle was born in St. Louis and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, an upbringing that seems to have given him both a reporter’s curiosity and an outdoorsman’s feel for performance under pressure. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1987, worked as a sportswriter at the Anchorage Times, and then continued journalism training in Chicago before joining Outside, where he became a senior editor and later a contributing editor. His early books showed a writer drawn to groups, ambition, and the conditions around achievement: Hardball, based on his time coaching Little League in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing projects, was later adapted into the film Hardball, while Lance Armstrong’s War and, later, The Secret Race examined elite sport from the inside.
