Dan Pontefract grew up in Stoney Creek, Ontario, and seems to have arrived at leadership questions early. In a story he has often shared, being cut from a provincial soccer team at sixteen left him determined not to treat people with that kind of disregard. That instinct toward more humane leadership ran through his education as well: he earned a BEd in 1994 and a certificate in educational technology in 1995 from McGill University, then completed an MBA at Royal Roads University in 2002. He began in education and learning roles, including work at BCIT, before moving into senior positions at Business Objects, SAP, and TELUS, where culture, learning, and employee experience became his central terrain.
