Cheryl Strayed is an American memoirist, novelist, and essayist whose work explores grief, addiction, love, and self-discovery. She is best known for the memoir Wild and the essay collection Tiny Beautiful Things; Wild became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller and was adapted into an acclaimed film.
Cheryl Strayed was born in Pennsylvania and came of age in rural northern Minnesota, where part of her adolescence unfolded in a house her mother and stepfather built without indoor plumbing, electricity, or running water. She earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and later an M.F.A. in fiction writing from Syracuse University. In interviews, she has described college as the decisive shift that made a literary life seem imaginable, and graduate school as the period when the first half of her debut novel, Torch, took shape.
