Bob Rotella is an American sports psychologist and author best known for applying performance psychology to golf. His books include Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and Putting Out of Your Mind, which helped popularize mental-game training among golfers, coaches, and competitive athletes seeking greater confidence and consistency.
Bob Rotella was born in Rutland, Vermont, in 1949, and his early relationship with sport was practical as much as aspirational. He caddied at Rutland Country Club, including for Bobby Locke, and grew up in a setting where golf, competition, and close observation all mattered. At Castleton State College, from which he graduated in 1971, he was a three-sport athlete, captaining basketball and lacrosse and also playing golf. Those years pushed him toward coaching and toward what he would later describe as the study of greatness rather than pathology; while coaching basketball and lacrosse, he entered a doctoral program at the University of Virginia in the mid-1970s.
