Alex Aster is an author of middle-grade and young adult fantasy and adult romance, best known for the Lightlark saga, the Emblem Island series, and Summer in the City. Aster is a #1 New York Times bestselling writer; Lightlark has sold more than 4 million copies in the United States and been published in more than 30 countries.
Alex Aster is a Colombian-American novelist whose writing life began early and developed through long apprenticeship rather than quick arrival. She has said that she started writing books at 12 and kept querying through her teens and college years, learning through repeated rejection. Her early imaginative world was shaped in part by her Colombian heritage and by the cautionary tales and folklore passed down by her grandmother, influences that later fed directly into the mythic texture of the Emblem Island books. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied creative writing, she entered publishing with the middle-grade Emblem Island series in 2020 and 2021, building a foundation before her wider commercial breakthrough.
