    According to the principles of Somatic Experiencing, trauma is not just the event that happened in the past, but the survival energy that stayed trapped in the body. When we face a threat, our bodies mobilize a massive surge of energy to fight or flee. If we are unable to complete that physical action—such as being trapped in a car or stuck in an abusive environment—that "survival energy" becomes a coiled spring in our muscles and tissues. Healing involves allowing the nervous system to finally "complete" that response and discharge the energy.

    Traditional talk therapy often stays "upstairs" in the neocortex, focusing on logic, language, and narrative. Somatic work goes into the "basement" of the nervous system to meet the body in its native language of sensation. By "tracking sensation," an individual notices raw physical data—like heat, tingling, or muscle tightness—without immediately attaching a story or judgment to it. This allows the person to address the biological roots of stress rather than just trying to talk themselves out of a physiological state of activation.

    Titration is the process of experiencing small, manageable "drops" of difficult sensations or memories rather than being overwhelmed by the whole experience at once. Pendulation is the rhythmic shift between a point of tension and a "resource," which is a place in the body or an external image that feels safe or neutral. By moving back and forth between the stress and the resource, the individual builds a "container" that allows the nervous system to process energy safely without the person becoming flooded or "re-traumatized."

    Trauma is fundamentally an experience of having no choice, which can lead to a "freeze" response or a loss of boundaries. In somatic work, especially in the context of intimacy, reclaiming the power of choice is the antidote to trauma. This starts with small decisions, such as choosing whether to sit or stand, and progresses to a "felt sense" of one's internal "yes" and "no." Establishing a firm "no" is described as the necessary foundation for a powerful and authentic "yes" in personal connections.

    Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps around muscles and organs, containing approximately 250 million nerve endings. It acts as a massive sensory system that stores "body memory" and "survival shapes"—the physical postures we adopted to stay safe during past stress. Because the fascia holds these hidden rigidities and family patterns, somatic practices like "pandiculation" (instinctive stretching) and "somatic dreamwork" are used to release this deep-seated tension and access the subconscious stories held within the body's tissues.
