Why is Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq often referred to as "Muhammad the Mad"?

The Sultan earned this reputation because of the extreme contradictions in his rule and his violent reactions to failure. It’s Girish Karnad’s *Tughlaq*, and Miles, I have to say, the premise is wild.
