    Pausing is a critical component of communication mastery because it allows the audience to process information. While we speak at roughly 150 words per minute, our thoughts move much faster, and rushing through a presentation can cause an audience to mentally check out. By utilizing the power of the pause, you move away from showing anxiety and instead demonstrate mastery, giving your listeners the necessary time to breathe and catch up with your points.

    Performance anxiety often creates internal pressure to sprint through a presentation, as speakers may feel that silence is a vacuum that threatens their credibility. Under the physiology of stress, adrenaline can warp your perception of time, making a short silence feel like a spotlight on failure. This nervous energy often leads to increased velocity in speech, which is frequently a sign of an overactive nervous system rather than a command of the material.

    The physiological reality of public speaking involves managing the rush of adrenaline that occurs when you are under pressure. For beginners or those with high performance anxiety, standing in silence can actually spike the heart rate and feel incredibly uncomfortable. Understanding that your perception of time is warped during these moments is key to mastering speech pacing and ensuring that your delivery remains effective even when your nervous system wants to speed up.
