The Stoics, particularly Seneca, observed that most of our distress comes from "ghost stories" we create in our minds rather than actual events. We often lose sleep over crises that haven't happened yet and likely never will. This internal agitation, which they called tarache, is a failure of perspective where we react to the scary stories we tell ourselves about the future rather than the objective facts of the present.

The Dichotomy of Control is a mental framework that divides life into two columns: things that are "up to us" and things that are "not up to us." Stoicism teaches that anxiety arises when we try to control things in the second column, such as other people's opinions, the weather, or the final outcome of our efforts. By focusing exclusively on our own intentions and actions—the things we actually control—we can maintain peace of mind regardless of external results.

This technique involves describing a stressful situation in the plainest, most objective language possible to remove its emotional power. For example, instead of viewing a "life-altering confrontation," a Stoic would see a "difficult conversation." This aligns with modern "affect labeling," where naming a specific emotion or situation in boring, factual terms calms the brain's emotional center and prevents a vague worry from becoming an all-consuming fog.

The practice of premeditatio malorum, or the premeditation of evils, is used to build mental immunity. By vividly imagining a worst-case scenario ahead of time, you remove the "sting of surprise" that makes disasters so crushing. It functions like a fire drill; it allows you to realize that even in the worst circumstances, you would still have your character and the "weapons of reason" to find a way forward.

Stoicism suggests that anxiety lives in the gap between where you are and where you think you should be. To counter this, you must "confine yourself to the present" by focusing entirely on the task at hand, whether it is washing dishes or sitting in traffic. By yanking your mind back from the "scary versions of the future" and realizing that you are safe and functioning in the immediate second, you stop the mental "stacking" of potential troubles that makes life feel unbearable.
