    Полипропилен обладает крайне низкой поверхностной энергией и химической инертностью. На молекулярном уровне его поверхность представляет собой идеально гладкую структуру без «зацепок», за которые могли бы ухватиться молекулы клея или краски. Это можно сравнить с попыткой взобраться на ледяную гору в гладкой обуви — материалам просто не за что зацепиться.

    Плазма воздействует на поверхность пластика как микроскопический отбойный молоток, разрывая связи между углеродом и водородом. На месте этих разрывов образуются активные радикалы, которые «хотят» соединиться с другими элементами. В результате в структуру пластика встраиваются группы кислорода или азота, создавая химические «крючки», которые намертво связываются с клеем или краской.

    Воздействие плазмы ограничивается ничтожно тонким слоем, который составляет от 10 до 50 нанометров. Это в тысячи раз тоньше человеческого волоса. Несмотря на такую малую глубину, этого достаточно, чтобы полностью изменить химические свойства поверхности, не затрагивая при этом основные физические характеристики самого изделия.

    При чрезмерно длительном воздействии начинается деструкция полимера. Вместо прочного активного слоя образуется «молекулярный мусор» — короткие обломки цепей, называемые низкомолекулярными окисленными материалами (LMWOM). В этом случае клей прилипнет к этим обломкам, но сами они не будут держаться за основной пластик, и покрытие легко отвалится вместе с верхним слоем.

    Со временем обработанный пластик проявляет «эффект памяти» или гидрофобное восстановление. Полярные группы, созданные плазмой, стремятся развернуться внутрь материала, чтобы минимизировать энергию при контакте с воздухом. В результате поверхность снова становится инертной, и уже через 24 часа эффект от обработки может значительно снизиться.
