Math-washing is a phenomenon where the inherent complexity of mathematical formulas acts as a shield against public scrutiny. This effect allows biased algorithms to be sold as objective and evidence-based tools, making it harder for society to identify and question the hidden values within the code.

If that history contains prejudices, the resulting AI models will likely mirror those biases. By outsourcing critical judgments—such as loan approvals or job hiring—to these systems, we risk automating and scaling unfair practices while mistakenly believing the process is entirely data-driven and neutral.
