    El procesamiento heurístico actúa como un "piloto automático" del cerebro; es rápido, intuitivo y emocional, lo que a menudo nos lleva a juicios apresurados basados en prejuicios, algo común al consumir titulares o redes sociales. Por el contrario, el procesamiento profundo se activa con textos complejos y requiere un esfuerzo cognitivo para analizar, comparar ideas y realizar inferencias. Este segundo nivel de lectura es el que fortalece el pensamiento crítico y nos hace menos manipulables al permitirnos detectar contradicciones.

    Este modelo establece que la comprensión lectora es el resultado de multiplicar dos habilidades fundamentales: la decodificación y la comprensión del lenguaje. La decodificación es la capacidad de reconocer palabras de forma fluida y automática, mientras que la comprensión del lenguaje implica tener el vocabulario y los conocimientos previos necesarios para entender el significado. Si cualquiera de estas dos capacidades es nula, la comprensión total será cero, por lo que ambas deben trabajarse de forma conjunta.

    La lectura funciona como un gimnasio cerebral que activa diversas áreas simultáneamente, como la corteza visual para crear imágenes mentales y la corteza prefrontal para el análisis lógico. Entre sus beneficios documentados se encuentra la reducción del estrés en hasta un 68%, la mejora de la empatía y la inteligencia emocional, y el fortalecimiento de la "reserva cognitiva". Esto último ayuda a retrasar síntomas de enfermedades neurodegenerativas y, según estudios citados, puede aumentar la esperanza de vida en un promedio de dos años.

    Para consolidar el hábito, que puede tardar entre 66 y 254 días, es fundamental priorizar la constancia sobre la cantidad. Se recomienda definir un propósito concreto, como leer 15 minutos diarios en un mismo lugar y hora para crear un ritual. Además, es vital elegir temas que despierten una curiosidad genuina para activar el sistema de recompensa del cerebro (dopamina) y eliminar distracciones digitales, como las notificaciones del móvil, para permitir que la atención no se fragmente.

    La prevención debe comenzar entre los 3 y 5 años mediante el desarrollo de la conciencia fonológica, que consiste en jugar con los sonidos del lenguaje oral sin necesidad de usar letras todavía. También es clave fomentar habilidades narrativas pidiendo a los niños que cuenten historias y enseñarles explícitamente vocabulario "académico" (palabras de nivel 2). Finalmente, la lectura compartida mediante la estrategia PEER —hacer preguntas abiertas, evaluar la respuesta y expandir la frase del niño— ayuda a estirar su capacidad lingüística de forma natural.
