La Plantation d'Ulster était une stratégie politique organisée par le roi Jacques au début du XVIIe siècle. L'objectif de la couronne britannique était de bâtir un nouvel État fidèle à l'Angleterre et de s'assurer que l'Irlande ne représente plus une menace politique ou religieuse.
Oliver Cromwell était le chef de l'armée parlementaire puritaine qui a débarqué en Irlande en 1649 pour réprimer les rébellions catholiques. Sa campagne militaire fut d'une brutalité extrême, marquée par des massacres de soldats et de civils, notamment à Drogheda. Il a instauré une politique de confiscation massive des terres, forçant les propriétaires catholiques à s'exiler vers la région pauvre du Connaught sous la menace "To Hell or to Connaught", afin de redistribuer les terres fertiles à ses propres soldats.
La bataille de la Boyne, qui s'est déroulée en juillet 1690, a opposé deux rois pour le trône : le catholique Jacques II et le protestant Guillaume d'Orange. La victoire de Guillaume d'Orange a scellé la domination protestante en Irlande et est devenue un symbole identitaire fort pour les unionistes d'Ulster. Pour les catholiques, cette défaite a marqué le début d'une période de répression sévère et le non-respect des traités censés protéger leurs droits.
Les Lois Pénales étaient un ensemble de mesures discriminatoires conçues pour maintenir la population catholique dans la pauvreté et l'impuissance. Elles interdisaient aux catholiques d'acheter des terres, de porter des armes, de posséder des chevaux de valeur ou d'exercer officiellement leur religion. L'éducation catholique était également illégale, ce qui a forcé les Irlandais à créer des "écoles des haies" clandestines pour enseigner aux enfants en secret.
Wolfe Tone était un avocat protestant inspiré par les idéaux de la Révolution française. Il a fondé la Société des Irlandais Unis dans le but d'unir les catholiques et les protestants contre l'oppression britannique pour obtenir l'indépendance. Il a réussi à convaincre la France d'envoyer des troupes pour soutenir l'insurrection irlandaise.
