"Insomnia" was actually a last-minute afterthought created to balance out the tracklist for the album Reverence. The music was composed by Rollo and Sister Bliss in a single day, and Maxi Jazz wrote the lyrics in just fifteen minutes before recording his vocals in forty-five minutes. Rather than being about club culture, the lyrics were inspired by a painful dental abscess that kept Maxi Jazz awake, reflecting a state of existential anxiety rather than a celebration of nightlife.
Faithless transformed dance music from "mindless hedonism" into an intellectually and spiritually rigorous art form. By combining Sister Bliss’s classical multi-instrumental training, Rollo’s complex production, and Maxi Jazz’s Buddhist-influenced "sermons," they proved that electronic music could have a soul. Following the passing of Maxi Jazz in 2022, the band entered a period of reflection before deciding to evolve rather than stop.
