    “

Real influence often flows from stillness. If your body says 'uncertain' but your words say 'I have a plan,' people believe the body every single time.

Research suggests that people form judgments about your competence and trustworthiness in as little as 100 milliseconds. To "hack" this snap judgment, you should adopt a "Command Posture" before entering a room. This involves imagining a string pulling the crown of your head to elongate the spine, keeping your chin parallel to the floor, and relaxing your shoulders back and down. A practical way to reset your physical baseline is to stand against a flat wall for 30 seconds with your heels, hips, shoulders, and head all touching the surface before your meeting begins.

The C.O.R.E. framework stands for Command Posture, Open Gestures, Regulated Eye Contact, and Expansive Spatial Awareness. Command Posture focuses on a grounded, upright physical presence. Open Gestures involve keeping hands visible (the "Trust Zone") and using illustrative movements rather than self-soothing fidgets. Regulated Eye Contact follows the 70/30 rule—maintaining eye contact 70% of the time while listening and 50% while speaking. Finally, Expansive Spatial Awareness encourages you to claim your space by using armrests or spreading out materials rather than shrinking or "self-marginalizing" in a corner.

Silence utilizes the "Power of Rarity." In environments where everyone is competing to speak, the person who remains quiet creates anticipation; when they finally do speak, the room is more likely to lean in and listen. Strategic silence allows you to act as a synthesizer, gathering everyone else's points to provide a final, high-level "anchor" for the decision. Additionally, using a "Well-Placed Pause" of two to three seconds before responding to a question signals emotional steadiness and deliberate thought rather than anxious reactivity.

To balance authority with warmth, a leader should practice "Active Listening with Visible Engagement." This includes using "Warmth Signals" like a slight head tilt or a slow, deliberate nod while others are speaking to show the message is being received. It is also helpful to provide "context for your silence" by verbally acknowledging that you are processing the information. Finally, building "Prestige" involves giving credit to others' contributions out loud, which signals that you are secure enough to celebrate the team's wins.

Anxiety leaks are nonverbal "self-soothing" gestures—such as rubbing your neck, fidgeting with a ring, or touching your face—that subconsciously signal nervousness to others. To eliminate these, you can replace them with "high-authority gestures" like the "Steeple" (touching fingertips together with palms apart) or "Palms-Down Pressing" on a table to anchor your presence. The fastest way to identify your specific leaks is to record yourself in a meeting and watch the footage on mute, which makes distracting physical habits impossible to ignore.
