The energy density of a standard lithium-ion battery is surprisingly low when compared to common natural substances. When measured in megajoules per kilogram, our current batteries are significantly less efficient than the simple chemical storage found in firewood or pantry staples. This disparity highlights the urgent need to look beyond lithium to find the true future of energy storage.
