Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were introduced in 1971 by a mutual friend named Bill Fernandez. At the time, Jobs was only sixteen years old. Blue boxes were electronic devices that allowed users to make free long-distance phone calls by mimicking specific tones, such as those from a whistle found in a cereal box. Jobs later noted that Apple might never have existed without the experience of creating these boxes.
During their early days experimenting with electronics and blue boxes, Steve Wozniak used the technology to play high-stakes jokes. In one famous instance, he pretended to be Henry Kissinger in an attempt to call the Vatican and speak directly to the Pope.
