In their culture, it was widely accepted that an individual would experience both same-sex and opposite-sex desires throughout their life. Instead of "who" one loved, the Greeks were concerned with the "role" one played—specifically whether a person was in the dominant, controlling position or the subordinate, passive position. Masculinity was tied to self-control and dominance, meaning a man's status was threatened not by his choice of partner, but by a perceived lack of mastery over his own desires.
