Like retired businessmen who wither without purpose, devoted women who have discharged their "social duty"-raising families and keeping house-find themselves abandoned by society with undiminished energy but no employment. When we consider the positive evil caused to half of humanity by their disqualification-first in losing life's most elevating personal enjoyment, then in the weariness, disappointment, and profound dissatisfaction that replaces it-we see that humans need no greater lesson than to stop adding artificial restrictions to nature's inevitable imperfections.
