Despite the close Anglo-American intelligence relationship, MI6 politely but firmly refused all CIA requests to reveal their source. Through careful analysis, the CIA identified Gordievsky by examining intelligence patterns. By March 1985, Gerber was confident they had identified MI6's source, assigning him the code name TICKLE. When Gordievsky was summoned to Moscow in January 1985, MI6 debated whether to extract him, fearing a trap. But Gordievsky himself remained confident. In Moscow, he learned he had been selected as the next London rezident, with the official announcement to follow later that year. Just twelve days before Gordievsky was to officially become rezident, Aldrich Ames-driven purely by financial need-contacted the Soviet embassy to offer his services to the KGB, setting in motion events that would threaten everything.

The Escape

On May 16, 1985, just one day after Ames's meeting with the KGB, Gordievsky received an urgent telegram ordering him to return to Moscow. The summons raised immediate alarm bells-Gordievsky had been fully briefed just three months earlier and hadn't received expected cipher codes. Upon arriving in Moscow, Gordievsky discovered his apartment's third lock had been turned-a dead bolt he never used. Terror washed over him as he realized the KGB had searched his home. The next days became an agonizing charade, as he maintained a facade of normalcy while sensing surveillance everywhere. On May 27, after days of mounting tension, Gordievsky was summoned to what was presented as a meeting about "high-level agent penetration in Britain." Taken to a secluded bungalow, he was joined by Viktor Grushko and two unintroduced men-actually General Sergei Golubev of Directorate K and Colonel Viktor Budanov, the KGB's top investigator. After being offered Armenian brandy secretly spiked with truth serum SP-117, Gordievsky descended into a drugged haze as the men interrogated him for five hours. Through the chemical fog, he clung desperately to Kim Philby's advice: "Never confess." The following day, Gordievsky was summoned before a KGB tribunal. In a bizarre scene, they announced his London position was terminated but he could remain with the KGB in a non-operational department. This strange clemency confirmed Gordievsky's suspicion that they lacked decisive proof. Budanov had decided to play "cat and mouse," keeping Gordievsky under surveillance until he cracked or tried contacting MI6. When Leila and the girls returned to Moscow, Gordievsky met them at the airport, looking haggard and stressed. In the car, he lied to his wife, claiming there was a conspiracy against him by jealous colleagues. Gordievsky's health deteriorated rapidly-he lost fourteen pounds in two weeks, developed an irregular heartbeat, and began drinking Cuban rum and smoking to calm his nerves. On June 13, 1985, CIA officer Aldrich Ames betrayed twenty-five individuals spying for Western intelligence against the Soviet Union, including Gordievsky. Though this gave Budanov the proof he needed, the KGB didn't immediately arrest Gordievsky, possibly because they were busy rounding up other exposed spies or still hoped to catch him in contact with MI6. Gordievsky arranged for Leila and the girls to vacation at her father's dacha in Azerbaijan, creating his escape window. Their parting was agonizingly mundane-a rushed goodbye at a supermarket doorway, with Leila distracted by shopping and the girls already inside. After meticulous preparations and surveillance evasion, Gordievsky signaled MI6 at the bread shop with his distinctive Safeway bag. Arthur Gee managed to reach the signal site, and their eyes locked briefly-a moment of silent recognition as Gee deliberately bit into a chocolate bar. The signal had been acknowledged. Operation PIMLICO was activated.

The Greatest Escape

As the PIMLICO exfiltration plan activated, the MI6 team sprang into action. The escape route would take Gordievsky through Finland-a politically delicate "Finlandized" country that would likely return Soviet fugitives if caught-and into NATO territory in Norway. The MI6 team staged an elaborate charade for KGB microphones. Rachel Gee performed convincingly as a woman with excruciating back pain, with Caroline Ascot playing the concerned friend. They discussed medical appointments in Finland, rejected expensive flights, and arranged to drive instead. With the operation already activated, MI6 chief Christopher Curwen urgently sought Margaret Thatcher's authorization. Her private secretary Charles Powell flew secretly to Balmoral Castle where the prime minister was staying with the Queen. Thatcher immediately approved the rescue of "Mr. Collins," whom she greatly admired despite never knowing his real identity. Gordievsky dressed in inconspicuous clothing chosen to avoid chemical detection, taking nothing that might appear suspicious. He executed his surveillance evasion techniques perfectly-sprinting through a park, using multiple Metro trains, and employing his practiced counter-surveillance moves. At Leningrad Station, crowded with international youth festival attendees, he boarded the overnight train undetected. Gordievsky woke on the train with a splitting headache, disoriented and bloodied from falling off his bunk while heavily sedated. In Leningrad, he took another train toward the border, then switched to a bus heading toward Vyborg. The MI6 extraction team was in serious trouble. Their two-car convoy was being escorted by KGB vehicles in a classic surveillance formation-one car in front and three behind. When a military convoy crossing the road temporarily halted all traffic, Ascot and Gee seized their opportunity, accelerating hard and opening a critical gap between themselves and their pursuers. At precisely 2:47 p.m., the MI6 cars screeched into the turnout just as their KGB pursuers sped past on the main road. A disheveled and wild-looking Gordievsky burst from the undergrowth. After a moment of mutual shock, Gordievsky simply asked: "Which car?" Within eighty seconds, Gordievsky was hidden inside the trunk, wrapped in an aluminum space blanket, with water, medical supplies, and an empty bottle for relief. As they approached the border zone, Gordievsky swallowed sedatives to calm himself, imagining the grim fate awaiting him if discovered. Through multiple checkpoints they progressed, with Gee briefly panicking about whether he'd properly locked the trunk-he had-while the women provided perfect cover, with baby Florence's fussing helpfully masking any sounds from their hidden passenger. Twenty minutes after crossing the border, the British cars reached the forest rendezvous point, where Gordievsky emerged from the trunk "like a newborn child in amniotic fluid." Still draped in a space blanket and soaked with sweat, he performed a courteous Russian gesture of gratitude, kissing the hands of all the women who had helped him escape.

The Aftermath

After Gordievsky's escape, MI6 launched Operation HETMAN to reunite him with his family. Through diplomatic channels, Britain tried repeatedly to secure the release of Leila and their daughters, but Moscow remained vengeful. In Moscow, Leila lived under effective house arrest with constant surveillance, unable to find work and dependent on her parents. Despite tireless diplomatic efforts, including personal appeals from Thatcher to Gorbachev, the KGB refused to release the family, using them as their only remaining punishment against the man who had humiliated them. After six years of separation, the Berlin Wall fell, Communism began to crumble, and the failed coup of August 1991 finally led to changes in the KGB leadership. The new head, Vadim Bakatin, overruled his generals and allowed Leila and her daughters to leave for Britain. When Leila and daughters Maria and Anna finally arrived at Heathrow in September 1991, Gordievsky had prepared a joyful homecoming with yellow ribbons, fresh linens, and a house blazing with light. But the fairy-tale reunion portrayed in newspapers masked a painful reality. After six years apart, eleven-year-old Masha barely remembered her father, while ten-year-old Anna saw him as a complete stranger. The marriage couldn't survive the trauma of separation and betrayal. They separated permanently in 1993, their marriage another casualty of the Cold War. After betraying numerous agents to the KGB, CIA officer Aldrich Ames continued his espionage from Rome and later from the Counterintelligence Center Analysis Group. His sudden wealth-a silver Jaguar, an Alfa Romeo, a half-million-dollar cash home purchase-eventually attracted attention, leading to his arrest in 1994. He pleaded guilty to espionage and received a life sentence. Oleg Gordievsky still lives under an assumed name in a nondescript suburban house in England, protected by MI6 and electronic security measures. The KGB execution order remains active, with former Putin chief of staff Sergei Ivanov blaming Gordievsky for damaging his career. The 2018 poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal prompted increased security. In 2007, he received the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George for "services to the security of the United Kingdom." At the thirtieth anniversary of his escape in 2015, those involved in his exfiltration presented him with a travel bag containing nostalgic items from his escape: a Mars bar, Harrods plastic bag, map, stress pills, mosquito repellent, beer, cassette tapes, cheese and onion crisps, and a baby's nappy. Gordievsky belongs in the small pantheon of world-changing spies. As a classified CIA review concluded, the ABLE ARCHER scare was "the last paroxysm of the Cold War." By betraying his country, Gordievsky had made the world safer.
