Meanwhile, in the highest circle, Lord Denethor broods in his tower. The Steward of Gondor has grown grim and fatalistic, his mind poisoned by visions seen through a palantir-one of the ancient seeing stones. Though he doesn't yet know it, Denethor has been manipulated by Sauron, shown only glimpses of truth designed to break his spirit. When his son Faramir returns from a mission and reveals his encounter with Frodo and the Ring, Denethor erupts in anger, wishing aloud that Boromir-his favored son, now dead-had lived to bring him this "mighty gift" instead.
The city's defenses are tested when the Nazgul begin their assault, their fell beasts circling overhead like vultures, their otherworldly shrieks sapping courage from even the bravest defenders. As the outer walls fall and Faramir is struck down while defending the retreat, Denethor slides deeper into despair. "The West has failed," he mutters, ordering a funeral pyre built for himself and his unconscious son.
In this darkest hour, Gandalf takes command of the city's defense, riding Shadowfax tirelessly between the walls, his white staff blazing light wherever the Nazgul draw near. When the massive battering ram Grond-shaped like a ravening wolf with spells of ruin laid upon it-finally breaches the main gate, the Lord of the Nazgul himself enters. "You cannot enter here," Gandalf declares, alone in the ruined gateway. "Go back to the abyss prepared for you!" The Witch-king removes his hood, revealing a crown sitting upon no visible head. "Old fool!" he hisses. "This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it?"
As the two ancient powers face each other, horns sound in the distance-wild horns blowing from the north. The Rohirrim have arrived at dawn on the fifth day, just as Gandalf had foretold.

The Ride of the Rohirrim
The plains of Rohan had emptied as King Theoden mustered every able-bodied rider to answer Gondor's desperate call. Six thousand spears gallop southward, though their path is blocked by enemies who have anticipated their coming. It is Ghan-buri-Ghan, chieftain of the Wild Men, who offers salvation-a forgotten path through Druadan Forest that will bypass the enemy's ambush.
The primitive chieftain speaks in broken Common Speech: "Wild Men live here before Stone-houses; before Tall Men come up out of Water." Despite his simple words, his knowledge proves invaluable as he guides the Rohirrim through hidden valleys where "no great army has passed for many lives of Men."
As they emerge from the forest at dawn, the Rohirrim behold Minas Tirith besieged, black smoke rising from its lower circles, the fields before it swarming with the armies of Mordor. For a moment, King Theoden seems to falter, the weight of his years and the hopelessness of the task before him pressing down like a physical burden. But then something changes-a wind from the south stirs the banners, and light breaks through the clouds.
The transformation in Theoden is immediate and profound. He sits tall in his saddle, his voice ringing out with supernatural clarity as he arranges his riders and raises his sword. "Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!" The king blows his horn, and its call is answered by thousands more. The earth trembles as the Rohirrim charge, their voices united in a terrible battle-cry: "Death! Death! Death!"
The impact of their charge shatters the enemy's eastern flank. Orcs scatter in terror before the fury of the horse-lords, and for a brief, glorious moment, victory seems possible. But Sauron has prepared for this-massive mumakil, war elephants from the far south, lumber onto the battlefield, their massive tusks adorned with spikes, their backs carrying towers of Haradrim archers. Horses rear in panic at the sight and smell of these behemoths, breaking the Rohirrim's formation.
In the chaos of battle, Theoden's horse Snowmane is pierced by a black dart and falls, crushing the aged king beneath him. The Lord of the Nazgul descends on his winged beast to feed on the fallen, but a small figure stands in his way-Eowyn, the king's niece, who has ridden to war in disguise as the young soldier Dernhelm, with Merry hidden behind her on the saddle.
"Begone, foul dwimmerlaik!" she cries. "You stand between me and my lord and kin!"
The Witch-king laughs. "No living man may hinder me!"
"But no living man am I," Eowyn responds, removing her helmet to reveal golden hair. "You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless!"
When the Nazgul strikes, Eowyn's shield shatters, her arm breaking with it. As the wraith prepares to deliver the killing blow, Merry-forgotten and overlooked-stabs the back of the Witch-king's knee with his Barrow-blade, a dagger forged long ago specifically against the power of Angmar. The Nazgul falters, and Eowyn drives her sword between crown and mantle. With a shrill cry that echoes across the battlefield, the Lord of the Nazgul is no more-fulfilling the prophecy that "not by the hand of man shall he fall."

The Black Gate Opens
While the battle rages on the Pelennor Fields, Aragorn makes his own journey to Minas Tirith by an unexpected route. After confronting the truth of his heritage as Isildur's heir, he takes the Paths of the Dead-a road under the mountains where an ancient army of oath-breakers has been trapped for centuries, cursed by Isildur himself for their betrayal. Only the true heir of Isildur can command them, and Aragorn does exactly that, compelling the Dead to fulfill their oath by fighting against Sauron.
With this supernatural army at his back, Aragorn captures the fleet of the Corsairs at Pelargir. When these black ships arrive at the battle of Pelennor Fields, the defenders of Minas Tirith initially despair, believing reinforcements have come for the enemy. Instead, Aragorn leaps from the lead ship, the banner of the White Tree and Seven Stars unfurled above him, leading an army of men from southern Gondor.
The combined forces of Rohan, Gondor, and Aragorn's reinforcements eventually win the day, but at terrible cost. King Theoden lies dead, as do countless warriors from both kingdoms. In the Houses of Healing, Eowyn, Faramir, and Merry struggle against the Black Breath-a deadly malady caused by contact with the Nazgul. Only Aragorn, with his ancient knowledge of healing herbs and his rightful claim to the throne, can save them. As he tends to the wounded, the old lore is remembered: "The hands of the king are the hands of a healer."
Despite this victory, Sauron's main force remains intact within Mordor. Gandalf proposes a desperate strategy: march on the Black Gate with their remaining strength, not to defeat Sauron militarily-which would be impossible-but to distract him, to keep his Eye fixed on them rather than searching his own lands for Frodo and the Ring.
"We must walk open-eyed into that trap, with courage, but small hope for ourselves," Gandalf explains. "For, my lords, it may well prove that we ourselves shall perish utterly in a black battle far from the living lands; so that even if Barad-dur be thrown down, we shall not live to see a new age. But this, I deem, is our duty."
Aragorn agrees: "As I have begun, so I will go on. We come now to the very edge, where hope and despair are akin. To waver is to fall."
Seven thousand men-all that remain from the combined armies-march toward Mordor. At the Black Gate, they arrange themselves on two hills of blasted stone while their leaders ride forth to parley. The massive iron doors swing open to reveal the Mouth of Sauron-a living man who has forgotten his own name after centuries in the Dark Lord's service. With cruel delight, he produces tokens: Sam's sword, an elven-cloak, and Frodo's mithril coat.
"He was dear to you, I see," the Messenger mocks. "Know that he suffered greatly at the hands of his host."
For a moment, despair threatens to overwhelm them all-until Gandalf snatches the items away, rejecting Sauron's terms of surrender. Battle is joined as armies pour from the Black Gate and surrounding hills, outnumbering the men of the West more than ten to one. As the defenders form their last circles on the hills, the Nazgul circle overhead, their voices crying words of death.
In the midst of this hopeless battle, Pippin finds himself facing a massive hill-troll. As the creature bears down on Beregond, Pippin stabs upward with his small blade, killing the troll, which crashes down upon him. As darkness takes him, he hears distant voices crying: "The Eagles are coming!" His final thought before consciousness fades is of Bilbo's tale so long ago.

The Land of Shadow
While armies clash before the Black Gate, Frodo and Sam continue their desperate journey through Mordor. Having escaped the tower of Cirith Ungol where Frodo was held prisoner, they disguise themselves in orc gear and begin the grueling trek across the plateau of Gorgoroth toward Mount Doom.
The landscape is a nightmare of ash, dust, and jagged rock. Water is scarce, and what little they find tastes of poison. The air itself seems hostile, thick with fumes from Mount Doom and the countless forges of Sauron's war machine. Vast camps of orcs and men cover the plain, forcing the hobbits to move carefully from shadow to shadow.
Their greatest challenge, however, comes from within. The Ring grows heavier with each step toward its destruction, its malevolent will pressing down on Frodo's mind. "I am naked in the dark, Sam," he whispers during one rest, "and there is no veil between me and the wheel of fire." His physical strength fades as well-the wound from the Morgul blade at Weathertop aches constantly, and the sting from Shelob leaves him weak and feverish.
Sam becomes both servant and master, carrying not only their dwindling supplies but often Frodo himself. "I'll carry you on my back, if I have to," Sam declares, and eventually does exactly that, staggering up the ashen slopes of Mount Doom with his master on his shoulders.
Gollum, who survived his fall at Cirith Ungol, returns for one final attempt to reclaim his "precious." He attacks as they climb the mountain, his emaciated body possessing surprising strength born of obsession. Sam fights him off, but hesitates at the killing stroke-something in Gollum's wretchedness stays his hand. "Now that I see him," Sam thinks, "I do pity him."
At last they reach the Sammath Naur, the fiery chamber within Mount Doom where the Ring was forged and where it can be unmade. Standing at the Crack of Doom, Frodo finally falters. The Ring's power over him becomes complete. "I have come," he declares, "But I do not choose now to do what I came to do. The Ring is mine!" He puts it on and vanishes.
In that moment, Sauron becomes aware of him. The Dark Lord's attention snaps from the battle at the Black Gate to Mount Doom, and he understands at last the true danger to his power. The Nazgul wheel in the sky, racing toward the mountain.
But they come too late. Gollum, in a final desperate lunge, attacks the invisible Frodo. In their struggle at the chasm's edge, Gollum bites off Frodo's finger with the Ring still on it. Dancing with mad joy, he holds his prize aloft-"Precious, precious, precious!"-before stepping too far and plummeting into the molten heart of the mountain.
The Ring melts away, and with it, Sauron's power. The Dark Tower crumbles, the Black Gate collapses, and the armies of Mordor lose all will to fight. As Mount Doom erupts around them, Frodo and Sam make their way to a small outcrop of rock, expecting to die but finding peace in their accomplished mission.
"Well, this is the end, Sam Gamgee," Frodo says quietly.
Sam takes his maimed hand. "Yes, Master, but I can't help wondering-what happens next?"

The Steward and the King
With Sauron defeated, the surviving members of the Fellowship gather at the Field of Cormallen in Ithilien. Frodo and Sam, rescued from Mount Doom by the Eagles, wake to find Gandalf alive-transformed from Grey to White after his battle with the Balrog. Their reunion is joyous, but tinged with the knowledge that the world has irrevocably changed.
In Minas Tirith, healing begins both literally and figuratively. Faramir, recovered from his wounds and the Black Breath, meets Eowyn in the Houses of Healing. Both have faced the Nazgul and survived, both have lost their purpose in life-he through his father's madness, she through unrequited love for Aragorn. In each other, they find understanding and eventually love.
"I do not wish to be a queen," Eowyn tells him, realizing her feelings for Aragorn were more admiration than love. "I wish to love things that grow, not all things that men have made."
"And I," Faramir responds, "would not be king, but a healer. I would love all things that grow, and heal what I can."
The city prepares for Aragorn's coronation. Women and children fill the streets with flowers, harpers come from Dol Amroth, and musicians gather from across the realm. On the appointed day, Faramir, now Steward of Gondor, meets Aragorn before the city gates and offers the white rod of his office.
Aragorn returns it, saying, "That office is not ended, and it shall be thine and thy heirs' as long as my line shall last." Then Faramir presents the ancient crown of Gondor, which Aragorn asks Frodo to bring forward and Gandalf to place upon his head. When crowned, Aragorn seems transformed-"tall as the sea-kings of old, wise and gentle, with light about him."
The King enters his city amid music and celebration, and the banner of the Tree and Stars unfurls upon the highest tower. Under King Elessar's reign, Minas Tirith grows more beautiful than ever before, filled with trees, fountains, and the laughter of children.
The most significant moment comes when Aragorn, guided by Gandalf, discovers a sapling of the White Tree growing on the slopes of Mount Mindolluin-a descendant of Nimloth and ultimately of Telperion, eldest of the Trees of Valinor. This living connection to the ancient past becomes the symbol of Gondor's renewal.
The final piece falls into place when Elrond arrives from Rivendell, bringing with him his daughter Arwen. Long ago, she had pledged herself to Aragorn, choosing a mortal life with him over her Elven immortality. Their wedding at Midsummer completes the restoration of the kingdom, uniting the bloodlines of Elves and Men in a bond not seen since the ancient days of Beren and Luthien.

Many Partings
With peace restored, the Fellowship begins to disperse. Eomer returns to Rohan with the body of Theoden, accompanied by Merry who has sworn service to the late king. Aragorn travels with them to honor his ally, and there Eomer proclaims Eowyn's betrothal to Faramir, creating a lasting bond between Rohan and Gondor.
On their journey northward, they encounter Saruman-now reduced to a ragged beggar after his defeat at Isengard, accompanied by the wretched Wormtongue. Though offered mercy, Saruman chooses bitterness, mocking the travelers and particularly Galadriel. When the hobbits offer him pipeweed, he responds with spite, cursing the Shire. Gandalf remarks that though diminished, Saruman might still cause "mischief in a small mean way."
At Rivendell, they find Bilbo, now 129 years old and visibly aged since the Ring's destruction. Though he often dozes during their tales of adventure, he remains sharp enough to work on his translations of Elvish lore, which he eventually gifts to Frodo.
As autumn deepens, the hobbits prepare to return to the Shire. Before they depart, Elrond offers Frodo a special grace: "If you then still feel the burden of your wound, you may pass into the West with Bilbo, until all your wounds and weariness are healed." Though Frodo makes no immediate decision, the seed is planted.
Their journey homeward is difficult for Frodo, who feels pain at the Ford of Bruinen on October 6th, the anniversary of his wounding. "There is no real going back," he tells Gandalf. "Though I may come to the Shire, it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same."
At Bree, they find the town changed-gates locked, people fearful. Butterbur reveals that "newcomers and gangrels" have caused trouble, though he brightens at news of a king's return. Before they depart, Sam joyfully discovers that his pony Bill has returned, "shaggy as an old dog and lean as a clothes-rail, but alive."
As they approach the Shire, Gandalf announces he won't accompany them further: "My time is over: it is no longer my task to set things to rights. You are grown up now. Grown indeed very high; among the great you are." With that, he turns Shadowfax toward the Barrow-downs to visit Tom Bombadil, leaving the four hobbits to face whatever awaits them in their homeland.

The Scouring of the Shire
The hobbits return to find their beloved Shire transformed. Trees have been cut down, ugly new houses built, and the once-clean river polluted by some industrial enterprise. "Gatherers and sharers" confiscate food, pipe-weed has disappeared, and rules restrict everything from beer to free movement.
Behind it all is Lotho Sackville-Baggins, who calls himself "Chief" and has imported Men to enforce his will. But Lotho himself has become a puppet to someone called "Sharkey," who rules from Bag End.
The returning heroes waste no time in raising rebellion. Merry blows the Horn of Rohan, calling hobbits to arms, while Pippin rides to gather the Tooks, the one family who've resisted the ruffians. When nearly a hundred Men march on Bywater, the hobbits ambush them, killing nineteen and capturing the rest in what becomes known as the Battle of Bywater-the last battle fought in the Shire.
At Bag End, they discover "Sharkey" is none other than Saruman, who has come to the Shire specifically to spite them. "You have grown, Halflings," he sneers, "grown to be nearly as orc-like as my servants." When Frodo offers mercy yet again, Wormtongue-driven to breaking point by abuse-slits Saruman's throat before being shot down by hobbit archers. As Saruman's body crumbles to dust, a gray mist rises from it and is blown away on the wind-his spirit finding no welcome in the West.
The cleanup begins immediately. Sam, remembering Galadriel's gift, uses her soil and the single silver nut to replant trees throughout the Shire. The year 1420 becomes legendary-perfect weather, extraordinary harvests, and babies born with golden hair. In the Party Field, Sam plants the silver nut, which grows into a mallorn tree with silver bark and golden flowers-the only mallorn west of the mountains and east of the Sea.

The Grey Havens
Though the Shire heals and prospers, Frodo does not. On the anniversaries of his wounding at Weathertop and his poisoning by Shelob, he falls ill, clutching the white gem given to him by Arwen. "It is gone forever," he murmurs, "and now all is dark and empty."
In September 1421, as Bilbo's 131st birthday approaches, Frodo puts his affairs in order. He hands the keys of Bag End to Sam, along with the Red Book-Bilbo's memoir, expanded by Frodo to include their adventures. "The last pages are for you," he tells Sam.
Frodo and Sam ride toward the Grey Havens, meeting Elrond, Galadriel, and Bilbo on the road. Only then does Sam realize Frodo's intention to leave Middle-earth. "I thought you were going to enjoy the Shire, too, for years and years," he says tearfully.
"I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me," Frodo explains gently. "It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them."
At the Havens, they find Gandalf waiting beside a white ship. Merry and Pippin arrive just in time for a final farewell. Frodo embraces each of his friends before boarding the ship with Bilbo, Elrond, Galadriel, and Gandalf-the Ringbearers and the Keepers of the Three Elven Rings departing together, marking the end of the Third Age.
Sam watches until the ship disappears into the West, the sound of waves sinking deep into his heart. He returns home to find Rose waiting with their daughter Elanor on her lap. Drawing a deep breath, he says simply, "Well, I'm back."
The War of the Ring has ended. The Fourth Age-the Age of Men-has begun. The time of magic and Elves fades into legend, but the quiet courage of the smallest beings has saved the world, reminding us that even the humblest person can change the course of the future.
