When El Nino brought drought in 1876, these changes proved catastrophic-without traditional buffers, 10 million Indians starved despite the country having surplus food. Merchants, following market logic, shipped record amounts of grain to Europe rather than feeding the starving. A second drought between 1896-1902 killed another 19 million.

Frantz Fanon urged creating societies that don't merely replicate Western models but offer humanity something new.
