The "holiness" once reserved for monastic life was now brought into the world, serving community, family, and state with a dynamic previously withheld by the clerical calling. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer recognized during humanity's profound suffering under tyranny, Luther's greatest impact came not as a German hero or church founder, but as a historic actor who shaped both public and private lives. Bonhoeffer wrote that Luther's return from the cloister to the world was Christianity's most consequential blow to worldly power since its earliest days. Following Jesus now meant living in the world-making Christian life no longer the domain of monastics but a duty for every believer, creating direct conflict between Christian living and worldly existence.
