Beyond his military accomplishments, he was an accomplished engineer responsible for "half the canals and most of the roads in Northern India," as well as a fine painter, geologist, and Fellow of the Royal Society. Despite struggling with ill-health from wounds and hardship, he was beloved by his soldiers for his close interest in their welfare. After Abyssinia, he was created Baron Napier of Magdala, received eulogies from both Disraeli and Gladstone, became Governor of Gibraltar, field-marshal, and Constable of the Tower, and received a state funeral before burial in St. Paul's Cathedral. Through Flashman's eyes, we see Napier not as a marble statue but as a man-methodical, quiet, worn by years of service, yet retaining the calm demeanor that had seen him through countless campaigns. When the mission concludes successfully, he appears "old and weary but content," watching his troops march past with simple satisfaction in a job well done.
