At school, English language and literature were his strongest subjects, even as exams generally came less easily; he has recalled failing his maths GCSE four times. At 18 he started writing for local newspapers in Northampton, Daventry, and Peterborough, then moved toward London and a long freelance career interviewing figures from television, film, and music for national outlets including The Guardian’s Guide, OK!, Total Film, Empire, Q, The Independent, and the Daily Express.
