传记与作者历程

David Brooks, born in Toronto in 1961, is a Canadian-born American writer, acclaimed commentator, and public intellectual whose career spans journalism, political analysis, and bestselling books. Raised in New York City’s Stuyvesant Town and later in the Philadelphia suburbs, Brooks was deeply influenced by his academically engaged family; his father taught English literature, while his mother studied British history. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in history, and his early campus writings showcased both wit and ambition—most notably in a satirical piece that indirectly helped propel his entry into national journalism.

名言

quote
Recovering from suffering is not like recovering from a disease. Many people don't come out healed; they come out different
-The Road to Character
quote
We don’t become better because we acquire new information. We become better because we acquire better loves. We don’t become what we know. Education is a process of love formation. When you go to a school, it should offer you new things to love
-The Road to Character
quote
The self-effacing person is soothing and gracious, while the self-promoting person is fragile and jarring. Humility is freedom from the need to prove you are superior all the time, but egotism is a ravenous hunger in a small space—self-concerned, competitive, and distinction-hungry. Humility is infused with lovely emotions like admiration, companionship, and gratitude
-The Road to Character
quote
wisdom isn’t a body of information. It’s the moral quality of knowing what you don’t know and figuring out a way to handle your ignorance, uncertainty, and limitation
-The Road to Character
quote
the art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook
-The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources Of Love, Character, And Achievement
quote
If you died tonight, what would you regret not doing?
-How to Know a Person
quote
Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs: the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so
-The Second Mountain
quote
You have to give to receive. You have to surrender to something outside yourself to gain strength within yourself. You have to conquer your desire to get what you crave. Success leads to the greatest failure, which is pride. Failure leads to the greatest success, which is humility and learning. In order to fulfill yourself, you have to forget yourself. In order to find yourself, you have to lose yourself
-The Second Mountain
quote
Humility is a virtue of self-understanding in context, acquired by the practice of other centeredness
-The Road to Character
quote
Humility is the awareness that there's a lot you don't know and that a lot of what you think you know is distorted or wrong
