Brandon Sanderson is an American fantasy and science fiction author known for the Mistborn saga, The Stormlight Archive, and for completing Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time. A frequent bestseller, he has won the Hugo Award and built a large global readership through expansive worldbuilding, intricate magic systems, and prolific output.

Brandon Sanderson’s path to authorship began indirectly. Born in December 1975 in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was not an especially committed reader until an eighth-grade teacher handed him Barbara Hambly’s Dragonsbane, a moment he has often described as decisive. He entered Brigham Young University in 1994 as a biochemistry major, served as a missionary in Seoul from 1995 to 1997, and returned convinced that writing, not chemistry, was the work he missed. Back at BYU, he switched to English, worked nights as a hotel desk clerk so he could write on shift, finished multiple unpublished novels, and learned the business of publishing from novelist David Farland. The first major break came with Tor’s purchase of Elantris, published in 2005; the second came in 2007, when he was chosen to complete Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time.
