Far from being isolated, the Ohlone established a sophisticated network of trade and exchange that connected the coastal peninsula to distant regions like the Mojave Desert and Yosemite, utilizing the bay as a vital resource for gathering and connectivity.
Despite its massive size, European explorers famously sailed past the Golden Gate for centuries because the entrance was hidden by thick, characteristic fog. It wasn't until 1769 that a Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolá finally encountered the bay. Interestingly, they did not find it from the sea, but instead stumbled upon the harbor from the land side, forever changing the landscape from an indigenous hub into a strategic global prize.
