Python was created by Guido van Rossum, a Dutch programmer at the CWI research center in the Netherlands. During the 1989 Christmas holidays, he sought a better way to handle system administration for the Amoeba operating system. He wanted a tool more capable than Bourne shell scripts or C programs, leading him to develop a language that combined the readability of the ABC language with the extensibility needed for complex system calls.
The 'batteries-included' philosophy refers to Python's design as a comprehensive toolset for software development. This approach ensures that the language comes with an extensive standard library, providing developers with the necessary peripherals and tools right out of the box. Much like a toy that includes all its power cables on Christmas morning, Python is designed to be accessible and functional for users immediately upon installation.
While working on the Amoeba distributed operating system at CWI, Guido van Rossum realized that existing tools for system administration were insufficient for the tasks at hand. He needed a language that could effectively communicate with system calls while remaining simple to read. This specific need for a more extensible and readable alternative to C and shell scripts served as the primary catalyst for the creation of Python.
