Explore the early life of Napoleon Bonaparte, from his Corsican origins in Ajaccio to his struggles as an outsider in a French military school.

My real glory is not the forty battles I won, for Waterloo’s defeat will destroy the memory of as many victories. What nothing will destroy, what will live forever, is my Civil Code.
I want to learn all there is to know about Napoleon Bonaparte.

Napoleon Bonaparte was born as Napoleone di Buonaparte in 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica. His birth occurred just one year after France acquired the territory from Genoa. Growing up in a family of minor nobility, he was technically born into a brand-new French territory that was still actively resisting French rule, a factor that deeply influenced his early identity and perspective as an outsider.
Napoleon was sent to a French military school at the age of nine through his father Carlo's connections. It was a difficult and isolating time for him because he did not speak the language fluently and possessed a thick Corsican accent. Due to being teased by other students, he became a loner who focused heavily on his studies, particularly mathematics, and spent his time writing essays and histories.
Carlo Buonaparte was originally a fighter for Corsican independence before switching sides to support the French once they took control of the island. This shift in loyalty allowed him to establish the French connections necessary to secure a place for Napoleon in a prestigious military boarding school. This move was pivotal, as it set the young Corsican outsider on a path toward a career in the French military.
