    “

The 'illusion of fluency' makes you feel like you are learning because the delivery is smooth, but your brain is actually in passive mode; true learning requires the discomfort of active engagement to make knowledge stick.

    자주 묻는 질문

The illusion of fluency is a psychological trap where a student feels they have mastered a subject because the delivery of information is smooth and easy to follow. As Jackson explains, this often happens during charismatic lectures with seamless logic. While the student feels a 'warm glow of understanding' in the moment, the knowledge often evaporates because the brain remains in a passive mode rather than actively processing the material.

According to a study co-authored by Kristina Callaghan at UC Merced, active learning is significantly more effective than passive listening, even if it feels more difficult. In the study, students who participated in activities learned more than those who listened to a 'great' lecture. Interestingly, the students in active sessions often felt they learned less because the process felt 'loose' or 'unstructured' compared to a fluid, professional presentation.

Students tend to prefer passive lectures because they are 'fluid' and 'easy to follow,' creating a sense of ease. Jackson notes that active learning can feel messy and counterintuitive, leading students to believe they aren't gaining as much knowledge. However, the research shows that while students overwhelmingly preferred the lecture format, their actual test results were higher after engaging in active learning sessions.
