    Der Zitratzyklus, oft auch Citratzyklus oder Krebs-Zyklus genannt, ist eine zentrale Drehscheibe im menschlichen Stoffwechsel. Er findet in den Mitochondrien statt und dient dazu, chemische Energie aus Kohlenhydraten, Fetten und Proteinen zu gewinnen. Durch eine Reihe biochemischer Reaktionen werden diese Nährstoffe abgebaut, um Elektronen für die spätere Energiegewinnung in der Zellatmung bereitzustellen. Ohne diesen Kreislauf könnte unser Körper die aufgenommene Nahrung nicht effizient in nutzbare Energie umwandeln.

    Der Zitratzyklus ist ein entscheidender Teilschritt der aeroben Zellatmung. Nachdem die Glykolyse Glukose vorverarbeitet hat, übernimmt der Krebs-Zyklus die weitere Oxidation. Dabei entstehen wichtige Moleküle wie NADH und FADH2, die ihre Ladung an die Atmungskette weitergeben. In diesem Prozess wird CO2 als Abfallprodukt freigesetzt, während die gewonnenen Elektronen die Grundlage für die Produktion von ATP bilden, dem universellen Energieträger unserer Zellen.

    Für den Energiehaushalt ist der Zitratzyklus deshalb so wichtig, weil er die effizienteste Methode darstellt, um Energie aus Nährstoffen zu extrahieren. Er liefert nicht nur direkt eine kleine Menge Energie, sondern bereitet vor allem die hochenergetischen Elektronen vor, die für die massive ATP-Produktion notwendig sind. In der Biochemie gilt er als Herzstück des oxidativen Stoffwechsels, da er sicherstellt, dass der Körper auch bei körperlicher Belastung stets mit ausreichend Energie versorgt wird.
