Explore the science of automaticity and habit formation. Learn why the 21-day myth is false and how the prefrontal cortex and basal ganglia rewire your brain.

You don't rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems. Success is the product of daily habits—even the tiny ones that don't seem to matter in the moment.
How to Build Good Habits

While many believe the myth that it takes twenty-one days to form a habit, modern research suggests a different timeline. A landmark study by Phillippa Lally at University College London found that the median time for a behavior to reach automaticity is sixty-six days. However, this process is highly individual, with the actual range spanning anywhere from eighteen to two hundred and fifty-four days depending on the person and the behavior.
The twenty-one-day figure is not based on modern behavioral science but actually traces back to the 1960s. It originated from a plastic surgeon named Maxwell Maltz, who observed that it took his patients approximately that long to adjust to their new physical appearances. Despite its popularity in self-help circles, this observation does not reflect the complex neurological rewiring required for true habit formation.
Habit formation is a battle between two distinct neurological systems. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for goal-directed behaviors, such as the conscious decision to put away a phone to focus on a deadline. In contrast, the basal ganglia consists of a cluster of structures deep in the brain that handle automatic behaviors. Understanding this interaction helps explain why making a change stick is a complex process of neurological rewiring.
