Explore Nick Bostrom’s Simulation Argument. Learn why this Oxford philosopher suggests it is statistically probable that we are living in a computer simulation.

If there are millions of simulated 'yous' and only one 'original' you, what are the odds you’re the one made of meat? In a universe where simulations are cheap, 'typical' means 'simulated.'
Nick Bostrom's Simulation Argument, focusing on an introduction to the logic behind the three core propositions.

Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford, proposed a logical argument in 2003 suggesting that we might be living in a computer simulation. He argues that if future civilizations develop the technology to run millions of ancestor simulations, the number of simulated minds would vastly outnumber biological ones. Unless our species faces a total wipeout before reaching this stage, it becomes statistically probable that we are currently existing within a simulated reality rather than a physical one.
Substrate-independence is the philosophical concept that consciousness is not tied to a biological, carbon-based brain. According to this view, if the functional processes of a mind can be replicated in silicon or other future technology, a conscious mind can exist outside of a wet, biological environment. This idea is a foundational pillar of Bostrom’s argument, as it allows for the possibility of creating digital minds that are indistinguishable from human consciousness.
The theory posits that if a future civilization becomes powerful enough, they would likely run millions of simulations of their ancestors for research or history projects. Because these simulations would be so numerous, the mathematical odds of being the one 'original' biological person are incredibly low compared to being one of the millions of simulated versions. This leads to the unsettling realization that we are likely NPCs in a highly advanced server rack in the future.
