Explore Aeronautical Decision-Making (ADM) and the three pillars of aviation. Learn why mental skills and system knowledge are as vital as physical flight maneuvers.

Aeronautical Decision-Making is the difference between a pilot who is just operating a machine and a pilot who is truly commanding it.
Things pilots should know in order to fly airplanes

Aeronautical Decision-Making, or ADM, is the invisible mental process pilots use to evaluate circumstances and select the best course of action during a flight. While physical maneuvers are important, ADM is the critical skill that keeps a pilot safe when unexpected situations arise. It represents the transition from simply operating a machine to truly commanding the aircraft through high-level cognitive evaluation.
Modern aviation experts categorize pilot skills into three distinct pillars: the Physical Airplane, the Mental Airplane, and Aeronautical Decision-Making. The Physical Airplane involves motor skills and maneuvers, such as landing a Cessna in a crosswind. The Mental Airplane refers to a deep understanding of systems like hydraulics and avionics. Finally, ADM is the decision-making framework that ensures flight safety.
While many people assume that "stick and rudder" moments are the primary focus of flying, physical skills actually only account for about ten percent of a pilot's job. The remaining ninety percent involves mental mastery, including a thorough understanding of aviation systems and the application of Aeronautical Decision-Making. This mental workload is what allows a pilot to effectively manage the aircraft beyond basic physical maneuvers.
The 'Mental Airplane' is a crucial pillar of pilot training because it encompasses a pilot's deep understanding of complex onboard systems, including fuel, hydraulics, and avionics. Without this knowledge, a pilot cannot effectively manage the technical aspects of the flight. When combined with Aeronautical Decision-Making, these mental skills allow a pilot to command the aircraft safely and respond intelligently to any system challenges.
