Essence appears intertwined with the stories we tell about things, which shape our feelings and perceptions. While Bloom sees this as giving depth to pleasure, the Buddhist perspective suggests the opposite: our pleasures are superficial precisely because they depend on potentially false narratives rather than direct experience.

While we must reject the core evolutionary value of self-specialness, we shouldn't reject that sentient life itself is good. We've reached a point in human history when tribalism threatens to fracture humanity along religious, national, ethnic and ideological lines, particularly dangerous in an age of nuclear and biological weapons.
Beyond personal benefits, meditation could help address our planetary crisis of conflict. I'm not suggesting a worldwide wave of loving-kindness, but rather the cultivation of calm, clear minds that can avoid overreaction to threats and soberly assess what animates them. We don't need to love our enemies, but seeing them clearly is essential, which involves transcending subtle perceptual distortions.
Buddhist teaching reveals a structural alignment between metaphysical truth and moral truth-seeing things as they really are naturally leads to seeing the moral equivalence between our welfare and others'. This isn't inevitable; one could imagine a universe where seeing metaphysical truth has no moral effect. But Buddhism claims we inhabit a universe where seeing clearly helps us see moral truth and achieve well-being. This three-part alignment of metaphysical truth, moral truth, and happiness is embodied in the richly ambiguous word "dharma"-simultaneously the Buddha's teaching, the reality beyond our delusions, and the natural moral law.
