In this worldview, the nation is forever innocent, forever victimized by external enemies. Time moves in circles rather than forward, with the same threats recurring endlessly.
Russia reached the politics of eternity first, with Vladimir Putin embracing fascist philosopher Ivan Ilyin as his guide. Ilyin's ideas are strikingly totalitarian - he believed the only good in the universe was God's totality before creation, and that our world of facts and individual existence represents evil. "Evil begins," he wrote, "where the person begins." His solution? A redeemer figure who would restore divine totality through violence and sacrifice - specifically, by shedding others' blood.
This philosophy perfectly serves kleptocratic regimes by justifying oligarchic rule. Without rule of law, social advancement becomes impossible, and governance devolves into crisis and spectacle. For Russian oligarchs who had accumulated vast wealth beyond the law, Ilyin's thinking provided intellectual cover for their power. His vision of Russia as an innocent victim of Western corruption became the foundation for Putin's worldview, justifying both internal repression and external aggression.
The politics of eternity sacrifices individuality for the illusion of belonging to something eternal. It creates fictional problems like Western hostility that can never be solved, allowing "robbers to present themselves as redeemers." Only history, as considered by individuals who accept responsibility, stands between inevitability and eternity.

The Fatal Flaw in Putin's System
At the heart of Putin's regime lies a fundamental contradiction - a system that cannot survive its creator. By discrediting democratic elections in 2011-2012, Putin trapped Russia in Ilyin's dilemma: no one can improve Russia while Putin lives, and no one knows what happens when he dies. Unlike functional states that have mechanisms for peaceful power transitions, Putin's Russia lacks any legitimate succession principle.
This isn't merely a theoretical problem. The Soviet Union that expelled Ilyin and educated Putin lasted only 69 years precisely because it lacked proper succession mechanisms. After Stalin's death in 1953, the country struggled through increasingly dysfunctional leadership transitions until its ultimate collapse. When Gorbachev attempted reforms in the late 1980s, the entire system unraveled, leading to the Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991.
Putin's rise to power in 1999 came through what insiders called "Operation Successor" - oligarchs surrounding an ailing Yeltsin needed someone who would protect their interests. With just 2% approval when appointed prime minister, Putin needed a crisis to solve. The September 1999 apartment bombings (possibly orchestrated by Russian security services) provided justification for the Second Chechen War, boosting his popularity to 45% and paving his way to the presidency.
During his first two terms (2000-2008), Putin's "managed democracy" functioned through manipulating conflicts while distributing wealth from high oil prices. But when faced with constitutional term limits in 2008, he installed Dmitry Medvedev as president while becoming prime minister himself. The constitution was changed to extend presidential terms, allowing Putin to return in 2012 and potentially rule for decades.
This manipulation created a succession crisis, as Putin had to rely on fraudulent elections to maintain power. The December 2011 parliamentary elections, where independent observers estimated Putin's party won only 26% of votes but was accorded a majority, triggered the largest protests in Russian Federation history. Rather than addressing legitimate concerns about rule of law, Putin took personal offense, openly acknowledged the fraud, and rejected democratic principles while expecting citizens to participate in future electoral rituals.
Having eliminated legitimate succession and created a permanent political emergency, Putin needed a permanent enemy to distract from his self-created crisis. The West became the perfect target - not because it posed any real threat, but precisely because it didn't. The fiction of Western enmity was necessary because Putin had made the Russian state vulnerable through his dismantling of legitimate succession.

Integration or Empire: Europe's Existential Question
After empire, European states faced an existential question: how could they maintain themselves without dominating vast territories? For decades, the answer seemed self-evident: European integration, which provided a foundation for a second, more peaceful globalization after the disasters of the first. By 2013, however, Russia proposed an alternative under the name "Eurasia": empire for Russia, nation-states for everyone else.
This vision ignored the historical evidence that nation-states had proven untenable in Europe. The major European powers had never truly been nation-states but empires before World War II, and participants in integration afterward. In the 1930s, the collapse of old European land empires after World War I had led to an experiment in nation-states that quickly failed during the Great Depression. After Germany's defeat discredited fascism, Soviet communism extended across nearly all the nation-states formed after WWI, proving again that the European nation-state was unsustainable.
European integration began in 1951, with Germany accepting France's proposition to establish the European Coal and Steel Community. As other European empires lost colonial wars and markets, the project expanded. Even Great Britain joined in 1973, followed by Portugal and Spain in 1986 after they lost colonies and replaced authoritarianism with parliamentary democracy. Europe had become a soft landing after empire.
By the 1980s, democracy through integration had become the European norm. The European Community transformed into the European Union in 1992, creating a framework of coordinated law, shared courts, free trade and movement. For post-communist Eastern European states, the EU offered security after empire. In 2004-2007, seven former communist states and three former Soviet republics joined, followed by Croatia in 2013.
The EU resembled empire in its economic scale but differed fundamentally through its organizing principle of equality rather than inequality. Unlike imperial powers that denied the legitimacy of encountered political entities, European integration proceeded from fixed borders and mutual recognition of sovereignty. By 2013, the EU's economy was eight times larger than Russia's, offering an alternative model to American, Russian, and Chinese inequality.
Until 2012, Russian leaders spoke favorably of European integration. Putin initially viewed EU enlargement as an opportunity and didn't present NATO expansion as threatening. After failing to create a stable state with succession principles and rule of law, Putin redefined success in terms of sexuality and culture rather than prosperity and freedom, portraying the EU as a threat based on its values.
A fundamental difference between imperial and integrated Europe was the attitude toward law. Putin followed Ilyin's philosophical trajectory: an early faith in law yielded to endorsing lawlessness as patriotic virtue. While the EU exported the rule of law through integration, Putin rejected the idea of a European Russia in 2012, embracing proizvol (arbitrariness) as redemptive patriotism.

Russia's Eurasian Vision and the War on Ukraine
Putin chose empire over integration, establishing the Eurasian Customs Union with Belarus and Kazakhstan in 2010. By 2011-2012, he proposed a more ambitious "Eurasian Union" as an alternative to the EU. Unlike the EU's rule-based system, Putin's Eurasia would impose no democratic requirements, uphold no laws, and require no dictator to step down. This "spoiler system" was designed to prevent states from joining the EU while eventually overwhelming Europe in a larger "Union of Europe" from "Lisbon to Vladivostok."
The intellectual foundations for this vision came from Eurasian thought - a specific Russian proposal to dominate Europe, arising in the 1920s as an alternative to both "westernizer" and "slavophile" traditions. While westernizers saw Russia as backward and needing reform, and slavophiles celebrated Russia's Orthodox Christian heritage, Eurasianists rejected both views. Instead, they focused on the Mongol influence, seeing Moscow's foundation under Mongol rule as protection from European corruptions.
In 2012, fascist thinkers entered Russia's mainstream with Putin's apparent blessing. The Izborsk Club, founded that September, became the intellectual hub of the new Russian nationalism. Its founder Alexander Prokhanov used Eurasia to mean Soviet power in fascist form. The club's manifesto portrayed Russia as perpetually threatened by a Western "liberal machine" that "disintegrates the fundamental principles" of the Eurasian state. It rejected factuality as a Western weapon and embraced a cyclical view of Russian history where empires rise, fall, and are reborn.
As Russia worked to destroy the EU in 2013, Ukraine was finalizing an association agreement with Brussels. The pact was broadly popular: oligarchs wanted market access, small business owners wanted rule of law, and young people desired a European future. President Viktor Yanukovych faced a clear choice between Europe and Putin's Eurasian project.
When Yanukovych failed to sign the EU agreement in November 2013, students and young people gathered at Kyiv's Maidan square, beginning a movement that would create something new: a nation. After riot police attacked student protesters on November 30, the "first drop of blood" galvanized citizens from across the country to protect "our children." The protests evolved from pro-European demonstrations to a defense of dignity and basic decency.

The Birth of a Nation Through Revolution
The Maidan created four distinctive political forms: civil society, the economy of gift, the voluntary welfare state, and the Maidan friendship. Kyiv's natural bilingualism defied outside attempts to frame Ukraine as ethnically divided - people switched freely between Ukrainian and Russian as needed, with language running "inside people rather than between them."
The revolution's core was about the rule of law, with protesters forming horizontal networks without hierarchies or fixed membership, creating a functional civil society where the dysfunctional state had failed. They established libraries, security forces, aid organizations, and anti-propaganda units based on the principle that "freedom was responsibility."
The Maidan's economy operated on extraordinary generosity - one volunteer collected $40,000 in two days from ordinary Kyivans, including pensioners donating half their monthly checks. What appeared as chaos to outsiders was actually a spontaneous welfare state providing food, clothing, shelter and medical care to all who came.
The Russian regime responded using the same tactics they had deployed against Moscow protesters in 2011: associating protest with homosexuality to evoke a sense of threatened civilization. Russian media consistently framed Ukraine's European aspirations in sexual terms, claiming the EU "groans under the weight of the LGBT lobby's domination." When Germany's foreign minister visited Kyiv, Komsomol'skaia Pravda headlined it as "Gay firewood on the Maidan fire."
When Moscow's attempts to help Yanukovych suppress protests failed, Russian strategy shifted dramatically. By early February, Moscow abandoned its support for Yanukovych in favor of a more drastic approach: sacrificing him while provoking nationwide chaos. A Kremlin memorandum declared "the Yanukovych regime utterly bankrupt" and proposed Russia's main goal should be "the disintegration of the Ukrainian state," seizing military-industrial assets in the southeast and control of gas transit infrastructure.
On February 20, while European diplomats negotiated Yanukovych's early departure, snipers killed about a hundred people near the Maidan. Abandoned by parliament and police, Yanukovych fled, leaving behind records of cash payments to his advisor Paul Manafort. The massacre marked Russia's shift to direct military intervention.

Russia's War of Deception
The invasion began February 24, 2014, with 10,000 Russian special forces without insignia moving through Crimea, reinforcing the 22,000 troops already positioned there. By February 27, Russian soldiers had seized the regional parliament, installed crime figure Sergi Aksionov as prime minister, and the Russian parliament endorsed annexing Ukrainian territory.
After annexing Crimea, Russia pushed for "federalization" of Ukraine, a euphemism for dismembering the Ukrainian state. Putin framed the annexation in mystical terms, claiming Crimea belonged to Russia because his namesake Vladimir had been baptized there a thousand years earlier, "predetermined" the shared destiny of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.
Emboldened by Crimea's fall, Russian leaders attempted to replicate the scenario across southern and eastern Ukraine. On March 1, Putin's advisor Glazyev coordinated coup attempts in regional capitals, instructing confederates to storm government buildings and declare independence. By April, Putin publicly acknowledged Russia's goal of Ukrainian "disintegration."
The Russian intervention in Donbas, dubbed the "Russian Spring," marked fascism's resurgence. Alexander Dugin celebrated the "expansion of liberational ideology into Europe" as fulfilling "full Eurasianism - Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok." He declared modernity "essentially wrong" and promised "real liberation from the open society."
Russia's war attracted support from fascists worldwide. American white supremacists Richard Spencer, Matthew Heimbach, and David Duke celebrated Putin, while Russia adopted a flag for occupied Ukrainian territories resembling the Confederate battle flag. European far-right figures embraced the invasion: Polish fascist Konrad Rekas endorsed Putin's Eurasia concept; Hungarian Jobbik praised Eurasia; Bulgaria's fascist party launched campaigns from Moscow; Greece's Golden Dawn praised Russia for fighting "international usury"; and Italy's Fronte Nazionale lauded Putin's stance against "the powerful gay lobby."
What Russian propaganda called a "coup" was actually a response to Putin's own illegal return to power in 2011-2012. The Maidan was fundamentally about establishing rule of law to address inequality and corruption. Unlike an actual coup, Ukraine's military remained in their barracks while riot police fought protestors until the end. When Yanukovych fled to Russia during the invasion, power transitioned through the legally elected parliament.

Truth as the First Casualty
Russia pioneered the politics of eternity, where kleptocracy made political virtues impossible. By destroying factuality, Russia created eternity where citizens couldn't see alternatives or organize for change. Television became the dark glass through which 90% of Russians viewed a manufactured reality.
Dmitry Kiselev, coordinator of Russia's international news agency, declared "Information war is now the main type of war." The propaganda operated on two levels: denying obvious facts (including the war itself) while simultaneously proclaiming Russia's innocence. When Putin invaded Ukraine in February 2014, he brazenly lied about Russian troops in Crimea, claiming they were locals who "purchased their uniforms at local stores."
This "implausible deniability" wasn't meant to fool Ukrainians but to create a bond of willing ignorance with Russians, who understood Putin was lying but believed him anyway. As Charles Clover noted, "lies unite rather than divide Russia's political class" - the more obvious the lie, the greater the demonstration of loyalty.
Putin's "implausible deniability" created dilemmas for Western journalists trained to report facts but also present "two sides." The Russian president positioned himself as one side while openly mocking factuality. Western editors featured Putin's denials despite overwhelming evidence of invasion, shifting the narrative from Ukraine's suffering to Putin's reality show.
Russia employed "reverse asymmetry" - a strong military using partisan and terrorist tactics to pretend to be weak. After easily taking Crimea by March 2014, Russia continued intervening in southeastern Ukraine using the same tactics of implausible deniability and reverse asymmetry to sustain the politics of eternity.
On July 17, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was struck by hundreds of high-energy metal projectiles from a 9N314M warhead fired by a Russian Buk missile launcher near Snizhne. Initially, Russian commanders like Girkin boasted about shooting down another plane over "our sky." The launcher was hastily withdrawn to Russia, photographed with an empty missile silo.
Despite the obvious facts, Russian media quickly worked to restore Russia's sense of innocence. Rather than denying events outright, they invented multiple fictional versions to change the subject. These contradictory fictions couldn't coexist logically but successfully broke the true story. By September 2014, 86% of Russians blamed Ukraine for the disaster.

America's Vulnerability to Russian Tactics
Vladimir Putin's grandest campaign was a cyberwar against the United States, which succeeded in 2016 largely due to American inequality. Russians knew Trump for what he was: not a "VERY successful businessman" but an American loser who became a Russian tool. Trump was effectively "the payload of a cyberweapon" designed to create chaos and weakness in America.
From a Russian perspective, Trump Tower was an ideal site for international crime. Russian gangsters laundered money through Trump properties beginning in the 1990s, with a third of Trump World Tower units purchased by people from the former Soviet Union. After his 2004 bankruptcy, only Deutsche Bank-which also laundered approximately $10 billion for Russian clients-would lend to him.
The fictional "Donald Trump, successful businessman" existed in American minds thanks to the television show "The Apprentice," where Trump portrayed a ruthless mogul who could hire and fire at will. This role prepared him for presidential debates where he outshone rivals through years of practice playing a fictional character.
The Russian security services excelled in "active measures"-operations designed to induce enemies to direct their strengths against their own weaknesses. By 2016, the average American spent over ten hours daily in front of screens, mostly connected to the internet. This technology no longer made American society look better to outsiders but offered Russians a better look inside American minds.
For Russia, the American "attack surface" was the entirety of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Google. Most American voters were exposed to Russian propaganda, with Facebook shutting down 5.8 million fake accounts right before the election. Russian campaigns included 470 Facebook sites generating billions of shares, event pages reaching hundreds of thousands, and thousands of targeted advertisements.
Russia's email hacks strategically released 22,000 Democratic National Committee emails before their convention, creating division between Clinton and Sanders supporters. When Trump faced scandal after the release of a tape revealing his views on sexually assaulting women, Russia immediately released John Podesta's emails, distracting voters with fictional stories about pizza pedophile rings and Satanic practices.
This selective transparency created a totalitarian atmosphere where private communications became public weapons. Citizens who harassed those exposed became unwitting participants in totalitarianism, while the drama of revelation distracted Americans from open sources showing Trump's extensive Russian connections.

The Road from Democracy to Oligarchy
America's electoral system contained inherent weaknesses Moscow could exploit. The electoral college allowed candidates with fewer votes to win, while the Senate disproportionately favored small states. Gerrymandering in states like Ohio and North Carolina gave Republican voters significantly more representation than Democrats. From Russia's perspective, these weren't just traditions but vulnerabilities.
Two Supreme Court decisions in the early 2010s accelerated America's authoritarian drift. The 2010 ruling that corporations were individuals whose campaign spending constituted protected speech effectively allowed elections to be bought. In 2013, the Court gutted the Voting Rights Act by declaring racism no longer problematic, immediately triggering voter suppression laws in 22 states.
American racial tensions provided perfect targets for Russian cyberwarriors. They created sites inflaming emotions around police killings, portraying armed blacks, encouraging racial violence preparation, and using fake black activists to spread white supremacist slogans.
The road to unfreedom runs from the politics of inevitability to the politics of eternity. Trump's "make America great again" resonated with those who believed the American dream was dead. Russia, having reached the politics of eternity first, knew how to push Americans in the same direction.
By 2016, Russia had become the world's most unequal country, with the top 10% owning 89% of household wealth (compared to America's 76%). About 100 Russian billionaires owned a third of the country, with Putin and friends at the pyramid's peak. America was approaching Russian-level inequality, with all gains since 1980 going to the top 10%, mostly concentrated in the top 0.01%.
A spectacular consequence of America's politics of inevitability was the opioid epidemic - essentially America declaring an opium war against itself. The epidemic created "zombification" comparable to what Russians described in Ukraine's Donbas region. By 2015, about 95 million Americans took prescription painkillers, and half of unemployed men were prescribed pain medication.
Trump's politics of eternity thrived where the American dream had died. The correlation between opioid use and Trump voting was striking in states he needed to win. In New Hampshire, traumatized counties swung from Obama to Trump. Every Pennsylvania county that flipped from Obama to Trump was in opioid crisis.

Breaking Free from the Politics of Eternity
To experience destruction is to see a world anew. As inheritors of an order we didn't build, we witness a decline we didn't foresee. We must set aside the myths of inevitability and eternity that accelerate trends while slowing our thoughts.
Virtues arise from institutions that make them possible, and as institutions are destroyed, these virtues reveal themselves. Equality, individuality, succession, integration, novelty, and truth depend upon each other and upon human action. An assault on one virtue attacks all; strengthening one affirms the rest.
Truth is central - without it, we cannot distinguish between what feels right and what is right. Authoritarianism begins when we lose this distinction, while cynicism welcomes tyranny. Democracy requires individual votes with equal power, not distorted by wealth, race, or geography. Integration means recognizing that no country stands alone, while fascism falsely claims a leader's chosen enemy must be everyone's enemy.
Seeing history clearly reveals our place in it and how we might change. We can halt our journey from inevitability to eternity, exit the road to unfreedom, and begin a politics of responsibility.
The threat to democracy is real but not inevitable. When we recognize that democracy depends on institutions that must be actively maintained, we can begin to repair what has been damaged. When we understand that inequality undermines democratic participation, we can implement policies that restore balance. When we see how easily truth can be manipulated through technology, we can develop both personal and systemic defenses.
The road to unfreedom is well-traveled, but we need not continue down it. By embracing factuality, supporting democratic institutions, and addressing the inequality that makes citizens vulnerable to authoritarian appeals, we can chart a different course - one that leads not to eternity's endless cycles of victimhood, but to a future we actively shape together.
