The substratum-that of which everything else is predicated but which is not itself predicated of anything-emerges as fundamentally substance-like. This can be understood through three distinct lenses: matter as substratum (like bronze in a statue), shape or form (the arrangement that makes something what it is), and their compound (the actual existing object that combines both). Each perspective offers unique insights into the nature of substance.
However, defining substance merely as "that which is not predicated of a stratum" proves problematic, as this would make matter alone substance. Consider a wooden table: when we strip away all its attributes-its color, shape, size, function-only the raw matter remains. Being musical isn't your essence, as you could lose this attribute while remaining yourself. Similarly, being white isn't the essence of surface, as surfaces can be any color. Thus health comes from health: the form in the physician's mind produces the corresponding form in the patient's physical matter through deliberate action.
Crucially, in any production process, we don't create the underlying matter itself - we don't make the brass used in casting a statue, nor do we create marble for sculpture - nor do we make the abstract form itself (the concept of "sphereness" or "beauty"), except incidentally. Instead, we make the composite - the brazen sphere or the marble statue - by bringing form into particular matter through skilled manipulation. The form or essence isn't produced anew; rather, it's what is made to manifest in something else through either artistic intervention or natural processes.
This reveals a fundamental insight about the nature of reality: Forms themselves don't come into independent existence - only concrete particulars do. There are no universal "spheres" floating in some abstract realm apart from individual spherical objects. The artist creates a "such" (a particular manifestation of form) in a "this" (specific matter), resulting in "this such" (a specific individual like Callias or a particular brazen sphere). This understanding helps explain why we can recognize common forms across different material instantiations.
Some things can be produced both through deliberate artistic intervention and through spontaneous natural processes. Health, for example, can be achieved through medical treatment or through the body's natural healing processes. Other things, like houses or machines, require intentional artistic production. This distinction depends on whether their constituent matter can be moved by itself in the required way to achieve the form. While stones cannot spontaneously arrange themselves into a house, organic matter often can self-organize into complex structures through natural processes.
A unique and essential feature of substance is that it requires another actual substance to produce it - nothing comes from nothing. The seed contains the form potentially, though parent and offspring need not share exactly the same characteristics (as when a man produces a woman, or when genetic variation creates diversity within species). This principle of actual substance producing potential substance underlies all natural generation and helps explain both continuity and variation in nature.

Just as some animals are naturally nocturnal, our minds may be ill-equipped for certain truths. We should be grateful both to those whose views we share and those offering superficial insights, as all develop our thinking powers. There must be a first principle, as causes cannot form infinite series or varieties. This is demonstrable in multiple domains: Material causes cannot proceed infinitely (flesh from earth, earth from air, etc.), nor can efficient causes form endless chains. For instance, a tree grows from a seed, which came from another tree, but this sequence must have an origin. Similarly, final causes must terminate-health exists for happiness, but an endless sequence of purposes would eliminate purpose itself, like a chain of dominoes with no first piece to fall.

Discussing difficulties clearly benefits those seeking solutions-thought cannot progress when entangled, just as bound people cannot move forward. There are many senses in which a thing may be said to 'be,' but all relate to one central point-substance. Some things are substances (like a tree or a horse), others are affections of substance (like color or size), processes toward it (like growth), destructions or privations of it (like decay), qualities of it (like hardness), or productive or generative of it (like seeds). Even non-being is defined through being, as darkness is understood as the absence of light. This multiplicity of meanings all refer back to substance as their focal point and source of unity.
As one science studies all healthy things despite their diverse manifestations - from healthy diet to healthy exercise to healthy mind - so one science studies all being in its various forms. The philosopher must grasp the principles and causes of substances, as this is primary and fundamental to understanding reality. Since being and unity are the same (implied in one another, as everything that exists is one thing), there must be exactly as many species of being as of unity. This parallel between being and unity reveals the deep structure of reality.
The inquiry into mathematical axioms and substance belongs to one science-the philosopher's-since these truths hold for everything that exists. Mathematical principles like equality and inequality apply universally, transcending particular subjects. The philosopher studying all substance must know the principles of syllogism and state the most certain principles of all things, as these form the foundation for all reasoning and knowledge.
The most certain principle is non-contradiction: the same attribute cannot simultaneously belong and not belong to the same subject in the same respect. This is a principle impossible to be mistaken about and non-hypothetical, as it must be assumed even to deny it. It forms the bedrock of rational thought and meaningful discourse.
If words have definite meanings, then contradictions cannot be simultaneously true. If 'man' means 'two-footed animal,' then necessarily something that is a man cannot simultaneously not be a two-footed animal. Those who allow contradictions destroy the concept of substance and essence, reducing everything to mere accidents without stable identity. This would make knowledge impossible, as nothing could be definitively known about anything.

A mere potency for movement isn't sufficient; there must be a principle whose essence is actuality, without matter, for eternal movement. This pure actuality exists without any potential for change, as change implies imperfection or incompleteness. For eternal uniformity with variety, we need a first cause acting in virtue of itself, maintaining the cosmos's ordered diversity while remaining unchanged.
This unmoved mover exists necessarily and is good, serving as a first principle that grounds all reality. The heavens and nature depend on this principle, which enjoys a life like the best we experience, but in an eternal and perfect form. God's actuality is pleasure, manifesting as pure intellectual activity, with thinking in itself dealing with what is best. This divine thought is not discursive or progressive but immediate and complete. Thought thinks on itself by sharing the nature of its object, becoming one with it - there is no distinction between knower and known in divine contemplation. The divine element is the possession rather than receptivity, with contemplation being most pleasant and perfect. God is eternally in the good state we only sometimes achieve-a living being, eternal and most good, experiencing continuous bliss.
Since each planetary movement requires its own eternal unmovable substance, there must be multiple such substances corresponding to stellar movements. This hierarchy of movers explains the complex motions of celestial bodies, each requiring its own principle. Ancient tradition correctly identified these celestial bodies as divine, a view we should regard as inspired wisdom preserved through time, reflecting deep astronomical and metaphysical insights.
Divine thought presents profound questions that probe the nature of perfect intelligence. If it thinks of nothing, where is its dignity? If its thinking depends on something else, it cannot be the best substance, as this would make it subordinate. It must think of what is most divine and precious, without change or interruption. The divine thought must think of itself, since it is most excellent-"thinking on thinking," a self-contained activity of perfect self-knowledge. Divine thought is indivisible, possessing its good not in temporal moments but throughout eternity, in an eternal now that transcends temporal succession.
This unmoved mover thus represents the pinnacle of being - pure actuality, perfect intelligence, and complete self-sufficiency, serving as both the final cause and first principle of all reality. Its existence explains both the eternal motion of the heavens and the aspiration of all things toward their own perfection.

Potentiality and Actuality
One of Aristotle's most influential contributions is his analysis of being in terms of potentiality and actuality. Potency refers to an originative source of change-the capacity for something to be or become different than it currently is. Actuality is the realization of that potential.
The primary kind of potency is an originative source of change in another thing or in the thing itself qua other. Some potencies are rational (accompanied by rational formula, like medicine) and can produce contrary effects, while others are non-rational (like heat) and produce only one effect.
Against the Megaric school, which claimed a thing can act only when it's actually acting (one who isn't building cannot build), Aristotle argues that potency and actuality must be different-something can be capable of being yet not be, or capable of walking yet not walk. Otherwise, we eliminate both movement and becoming.
Actuality is prior to potency in formula (since potential is defined by its possible actualization), in substantiality (because what's later in becoming is prior in form), and sometimes in time (actual things of the same species precede potential ones). For eternal things, actuality is prior in an even stricter sense, as eternal things exist only actually, never potentially.
Actuality is better and more valuable than good potency. Everything capable of doing something can produce contraries-what can be well can also be ill. But while the capacity contains both contraries simultaneously, the actualities cannot coexist.
