Modern Philosophy: The Quest for Certainty

The modern era of philosophy began with Rene Descartes (1596-1650), who sought to establish what we can know with absolute certainty. After studying extensively, Descartes concluded that medieval knowledge was unreliable. He developed a philosophical method modeled on mathematics, believing philosophy should proceed from simple to complex ideas, accepting as true only what we can "clearly and distinctly perceive." Descartes began his philosophical journey by doubting everything - both handed-down knowledge and sensory experience. He questioned whether we can distinguish waking life from dreams, asking "How can you be certain that your whole life is not a dream?" While many philosophers stopped at this point of complete skepticism, Descartes found one certainty: the fact of his doubting. Since doubting requires thinking, he concluded "Cogito, ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"). From this certainty, Descartes argued that he possessed an innate idea of a perfect entity that couldn't have originated from his imperfect self. This idea must have come from God himself. Descartes maintained that existence is inherent in the concept of perfection - a perfect being wouldn't be perfect without existing. Descartes concluded there are two fundamentally different substances in reality: thought (mind) and extension (matter). Mind is purely conscious, takes no physical space, and cannot be subdivided. Matter is purely extension, occupies space, and is infinitely divisible but has no consciousness. Though both originate from God, these substances exist independently. Humans are unique dual creatures possessing both a mechanistic body and an independent mind. Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) rejected Descartes' dualism in favor of monism - the belief that all reality consists of a single substance. Living modestly by polishing lenses, Spinoza encouraged viewing life "from the perspective of eternity" - seeing oneself as a tiny part of nature's vast whole across both infinite space and eternal time. Unlike traditional religious views, Spinoza identified nature with God, declaring "God is all, and all is in God" - a pantheistic view suggesting we exist within God rather than God standing outside creation. British empiricism, led by John Locke (1632-1704) and David Hume (1711-1776), challenged the rationalist approach. Empiricists believed all knowledge comes from sensory experience, summarized in the phrase "There is nothing in the mind except what was first in the senses." Unlike rationalists who believed in innate ideas, empiricists insisted on examining concepts based on actual experience, rejecting abstract notions without sensory foundation. Hume took everyday experience as his starting point, aiming to clear away the "woolly concepts" accumulated from medieval and rationalist philosophy. He distinguished between "impressions" (immediate sensations of reality) and "ideas" (recollections of these impressions). Applying his empirical method to the concept of the self, Hume rejected Descartes' notion of an unalterable "I," describing the self as "nothing but a bundle or collection of different perceptions" in perpetual flux.

The Modern World: From Kant to Darwin and Beyond

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) revolutionized philosophy by synthesizing rationalism and empiricism. He agreed with empiricists that all knowledge begins with experience but argued that the mind actively structures this experience through innate categories like space, time, and causality. These categories are like glasses we cannot remove - they shape how we perceive reality but also limit what we can know. Kant distinguished between phenomena (things as they appear to us) and noumena (things as they are in themselves), arguing that we can never know the latter. Kant rejected both empirical and rational proofs for God's existence, creating instead a space for faith. Unlike Descartes, Kant emphasized that belief in God, immortality, and free will were "practical postulates" - necessary assumptions for morality rather than provable facts. Unlike Hume who based morality on sentiments, Kant believed moral law is inherent in human reason as "practical reason" - an innate ability to discern right from wrong. Kant formulated this as the "categorical imperative": one should act only according to principles that could become universal laws, and always treat humanity as an end rather than merely a means. The Romantic movement emerged in the late eighteenth century as a reaction against the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason. The Romantics valued feeling, imagination, experience, and yearning instead of pure rationality. They were characterized by their longing for distant and unattainable things - medieval times, exotic cultures, twilight, ruins, and the supernatural. The Romantics embraced a cosmic consciousness, viewing nature as a living whole containing a divine "ego" or "world spirit." Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) developed a comprehensive philosophical system based on dialectical thinking. He saw history as the progressive self-realization of "Spirit" or "Absolute Mind" through a process of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. For Hegel, history wasn't random but followed a rational pattern toward greater freedom and self-awareness. Each historical period represented a necessary stage in humanity's development, with conflicts and contradictions driving progress toward higher syntheses. Karl Marx (1818-1883) adapted Hegel's dialectical method but rejected his idealism. For Marx, material conditions and economic relations - not ideas - drive historical change. He analyzed how capitalism alienates workers from their labor and predicted its eventual collapse due to internal contradictions. Marx envisioned a classless society where resources would be distributed according to need, famously declaring "The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it." Charles Darwin (1809-1882) revolutionized our understanding of life with his theory of evolution through natural selection. By showing that humans resulted from biological evolution rather than special creation, Darwin challenged humanity's self-conception as fundamentally separate from other animals. His theory implied that life's complexity could emerge through natural processes without divine intervention, though Darwin himself remained agnostic about ultimate origins. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) completed this naturalistic revolution by demonstrating that human actions often stem from unconscious "animal" urges. By exploring the unconscious mind, Freud showed that humans aren't as rational as Enlightenment thinkers had assumed. His theories about repression, the Oedipus complex, and the structure of the psyche (id, ego, superego) transformed our understanding of human motivation and behavior.
