When we construe sensation on the model of 'object and designation,' the object drops out as irrelevant. The sensation isn't a something, but not a nothing either - we've only rejected the grammar forcing itself on us. The paradox disappears when we break with the idea that language always functions to convey thoughts.
Wittgenstein isn't denying inner processes occur when remembering. The impression he wants to deny something arises because he sets his face against the picture of the 'inner process' giving us the correct idea of how we use "remember." To deny the mental process would mean denying that anyone ever remembers anything. He's not a behaviorist - if he speaks of fiction, it's grammatical fiction.

Understanding isn't a mental process in the same way that hearing a tune or feeling pain are mental processes. What's "behind" the utterance "Now I understand" are particular circumstances justifying my claim that I can continue. A student solving algebra problems demonstrates understanding not through any specific mental state, but through their ability to correctly apply algebraic rules to new problems.
When someone suddenly grasps a principle, they may have a special experience - that "aha!" moment. But what justifies saying they understand isn't the experience itself but the circumstances under which they had it - circumstances that justify saying they know how to go on. For example, a chess player might suddenly understand a strategic concept not because of a mental flash, but because they can now consistently identify and apply that strategy in different game situations.
"Now I know how to go on!" is an exclamation like an instinctive sound or glad start. It doesn't follow that I won't get stuck when trying. Our certainty about continuing a series needs no grounds - what could justify certainty better than success? We expect this, are surprised at that, but the chain of reasons has an end. Consider learning to ride a bicycle - at some point, you simply know you can do it, not because of any mental process, but because you're actually doing it successfully.
Understanding manifests itself in practice, in our ability to continue correctly, to apply rules appropriately, and to recognize relevant similarities and differences. It's shown in our actions and reactions, not in any accompanying mental state or process. This is why teaching focuses on practice and application rather than trying to transmit some mysterious mental content.

Silent "internal" speech isn't a half-hidden version of regular speech - rather, the concept of internal speech runs parallel to "outward" processes but remains distinct. The intimate relationship between saying something inwardly and saying it aloud shows in our reliable ability to report what we said in our heads and to coordinate inner speech with external actions, like mouthing words or gesturing while thinking.
"I know what I want, believe, feel" isn't an a priori judgment immune to doubt - saying "I know" expresses certainty but doesn't make doubt logically impossible. We can meaningfully say "I know" in contexts where "I believe" would also make sense, or in situations where verification is possible. Self-knowledge isn't privileged or infallible.
Unlike straightforward matters like mathematical calculations or basic color judgments, we frequently disagree about whether expressions of feeling are genuine or artificial. This kind of knowledge depends on "imponderable evidence" - subtle variations in glance, gesture, tone and timing that resist systematic categorization. While an experienced person might readily recognize a genuine loving look and distinguish it from pretense, they may struggle to explicitly describe the telltale differences.
