For example, a partner's mild criticism might normally cause minor hurt, but when our past wounds are surfacing, that same criticism becomes extremely painful because it triggers childhood feelings when we took all criticism personally. As intimacy grows, deeper painful feelings surface that need healing. When these deep feelings emerge, we often project them onto our partner. Paradoxically, we feel safe enough with our partner for our deepest fears to surface, but then become too afraid to share them. We may become numb, depressed, anxious or resentful. A relationship is like a garden that needs regular care through changing seasons. Love follows natural cycles that we must understand to keep its magic alive. Falling in love is like springtime-a magical period of innocence when everything seems perfect and works effortlessly. Our partner seems to be the perfect fit, and we dance together in harmony. During summer, we realize our partner isn't perfect. Frustration and disappointment arise; the relationship needs work. Many couples become disillusioned and give up, not realizing love sometimes requires hard work. We must nurture our partner's needs while asking for what we need. After tending the garden during summer, we harvest the results. Fall is a golden, fulfilling time of mature love that accepts imperfections. It's a time of thanksgiving and sharing, when we can relax and enjoy the love we've created. During winter, nature pulls back within itself. This is when we experience our unresolved pain and shadow self. It's a time of solitary growth and healing when we must look to ourselves rather than our partners. Men hibernate in their caves; women sink to the bottom of their wells. After healing ourselves through winter, spring inevitably returns with feelings of hope and new possibilities. Though thousands have transformed their relationships using these insights, remember that love is seasonal. In spring it's easy, in summer it's work, in autumn you feel fulfilled, but in winter you feel empty. During difficult times, you may forget everything you've learned. The learning process requires not only hearing and applying but also forgetting and remembering again. Understanding and accepting our different natures doesn't mean we can't grow together-it means we can grow together more harmoniously, with greater compassion for our inherent differences.
