Soon her cousin Abigail Williams suffered similar fits, even more dramatically running around the house and nearly falling into the fireplace. Word spread quickly through Salem as the girls claimed they were being pricked with pins and pinched by invisible forces.
When Reverend Parris consulted the village doctor, he was told there was no medical cure. Reverend John Hale from Beverly concluded, "The hand of Satan is in them." A neighbor suggested Tituba, the Parris family's Caribbean slave, bake a "witch cake" using rye bread mixed with the girls' urine to identify who was bewitching them. Though this folk remedy failed, suspicion fell on Tituba herself. Soon the afflicted girls named Tituba as their tormentor, claiming her "specter" followed and tormented them.
Two more girls, Ann Putnam and Elizabeth Hubbard, became afflicted and accused Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne-both social outcasts. On March 1, 1692, all three women were arrested and questioned at the Salem meetinghouse before a packed crowd. When examined, doctors found a "devil's mark" on Bridget that mysteriously disappeared hours later. In court, her accusers immediately fell into convulsions when she looked at them. Witnesses testified that her specter admitted to killing four women, threatened to drown a girl if she didn't sign the Devil's book, and sent black pigs and a talking monkey to threaten others. Despite her pleas of innocence, the jury found her guilty.
On June 10, Bridget was hanged at what would become known as Gallows Hill, the first of Salem's witch executions. Meanwhile, controversy grew about using "spectral evidence" in trials, with Increase Mather opposing it while his son Cotton advocated for it. Judge Nathaniel Saltonstall resigned in disgust after Bridget's execution, but the Salem gallows were just beginning their work.
The trials soon took an even more disturbing turn when Rebecca Nurse, a respected seventy-one-year-old Salem resident known for her piety and compassion, stood accused. Unlike previous defendants who were social outcasts, Rebecca's case shocked the community. The trial revealed political undercurrents-her husband Francis opposed Reverend Parris and had a property dispute with the Putnam family.
During the dramatic trial, thirty-one witnesses testified to Rebecca's good character, and the jury initially found her not guilty. But when the afflicted girls erupted in fits, Judge Stoughton questioned Rebecca about referring to a confessed witch as "one of us." Her silence due to poor hearing was interpreted as guilt, and the jury reversed its verdict. Despite appeals and a brief reprieve from Governor Phips, Rebecca was excommunicated and sentenced to hang. On July 19, she and four other women were executed, bringing the death toll to six. Sarah Good cursed Reverend Noyes before her death, declaring "if you take away my life, God will give you blood to drink."

On April 4, 1692, he became the first man arrested for witchcraft. Though his wife Elizabeth's execution was postponed due to pregnancy, John Proctor was hanged on August 19 alongside Reverend George Burroughs, whose perfect recitation of the Lord's Prayer at the gallows nearly caused the crowd to intervene until Cotton Mather reminded them the Devil can transform into "an angel of light."
Even more heartbreaking was the case of sixteen-year-old Margaret Jacobs, who watched in terror as men approached her family's farm to arrest her and her cantankerous eighty-three-year-old grandfather, George Jacobs Sr. Their servant Sarah Churchill, who had been called "bitch-witch" by the old man, stood by with a bemused smile, having accused them of witchcraft.
In prison, frightened and alone, Margaret eventually confessed to being a witch under intense interrogation, choosing to "lie or die." She also testified against her grandfather, who defiantly refused to confess, telling the court, "You tax me for a wizard, you may as well tax me for a buzzard." Overcome with guilt, Margaret courageously recanted her confession and accusations, putting her own life at risk but failing to save her grandfather. In their final meeting before his execution on August 19, 1692, they embraced one last time.
By the end of these executions, eleven accused witches had been killed, with scores more awaiting trial. The madness showed no signs of abating, and no one-regardless of age, wealth, or reputation-was safe from accusation.

No one wielded more power in New England than Reverend Increase Mather and his son Cotton. As Salem's executions multiplied, even the elder Mather could no longer control the situation. The only witch trial Increase attended was George Burroughs's, where his silence was taken as approval. His son Cotton, far more zealous at twenty-nine, attended Burroughs's hanging and calmed objecting crowds. Cotton's religious fervor began early-reading fifteen biblical chapters daily as a child and overcoming a stammer to join his father at North Church. His book "Memorable Providences" terrified Salem with warnings about witches' powers, making him the colony's leading expert on demonic possession.
Behind the scenes, Thomas Putnam emerged as another architect of the witch hunt. Once overlooked, he now wielded terrifying power-personally accusing forty-three people, twelve of whom were executed while two died awaiting trial. He controlled the four primary accusers: his twelve-year-old daughter Ann, seventeen-year-old servant Mercy Lewis, eleven-year-old Abigail Williams, and seventeen-year-old Mary Walcott.
For these girls, especially Ann who testified against sixty-two witches, the trials provided unprecedented attention and power. Even four-year-old Dorothy Good was imprisoned for nine months after Ann's accusation, emerging permanently traumatized. The afflicted girls' notoriety spread throughout New England. They were invited to Andover where sixty-seven witches were arrested (though only three hanged), and later to Gloucester where more were discovered.
As confessed witches shared cells in Boston, they learned that accusing others might save them from the noose, creating a steady stream of new names. By winter 1692, Salem lay devastated. Nineteen "witches" had been executed with scores more awaiting likely death. Yet the Devil appeared stronger than ever.

The tide finally turned when Governor William Phips returned from building fortifications against French and Indian raids in Maine to discover his own wife, Dame Mary, had been accused of witchcraft. The jails overflowed with up to two hundred accused witches awaiting trial, and in his absence, "the Devil had entered his own home."
Phips had reason to worry. As a young man, he had consulted fortune-tellers, and after discovering sunken Spanish treasure in the Caribbean (which led to his royal appointment), he reportedly gifted a soothsayer 200. His wife Mary, a wealthy, beautiful widow five years his senior, had relatives accused of witchcraft and kept unusual servants: a black slave and a white Catholic girl Phips captured in Jamaica.
The governor took decisive action: he forced the court to drop charges against Mary, temporarily suspended all witch arrests, released many prisoners, and banned publications about the witch hunt (with one exception-Cotton Mather's defense of the trials). On October 29, Phips officially disbanded the witch court, replacing it with a Superior Court of Judicature explicitly prohibited from considering spectral evidence. When the fanatical Judge Stoughton secretly ordered eight graves dug in anticipation of more executions, an enraged Phips overrode him and canceled all executions.
Though more trials continued under the new court, no more hangings occurred. For the Salem girls, their reign of terror ended abruptly. When invited to Gloucester to expose witches, they named three people but found themselves suddenly powerless when none were arrested. During their return journey, they fell into fits upon passing an elderly woman-behavior that months earlier would have meant a death sentence-yet the woman simply walked away undisturbed. Their influence had evaporated.
In 1697, Massachusetts declared a day of fasting to repent for the hysteria. Salem marked the end of witch trials in New England, with the colony declaring them unlawful in 1702 and compensating victims' families in 1711, though a formal apology wouldn't come until 1957. By the early eighteenth century, America was becoming more secular, though Puritan theology remained influential. The religious conflict that would involve the Founding Fathers and fuel the American Revolution was partly defined by the witch trial atrocities, with the "specter" of those wrongfully executed continuing to haunt colonial America.

The Salem witch trials left an indelible mark on American consciousness, influencing the nation's founders to establish protections against religious persecution. Benjamin Franklin, born just fourteen years after the trials, became a vocal critic of religious extremism. As a sixteen-year-old apprentice in Boston, he secretly wrote editorials under the pseudonym "Silence Dogood" that cleverly mocked Cotton Mather.
When Franklin fled to Philadelphia in 1723, he found the City of Brotherly Love to be everything Boston was not-a place where William Penn's belief in separation of church and state made Pennsylvania the most liberal part of the New World. Though initially broke, Franklin quickly found work and eventually established himself as a printer, publisher, and inventor.
By the 1760s, religious controversy had spread throughout the colonies. In Virginia, Patrick Henry boldly argued against religious taxation in the "Parson's Cause" case, calling the king's intervention in local religious matters "tyranny." Despite Judge John Henry ruling in favor of the parsons and the Crown, the jury delivered a symbolic verdict-awarding damages of only one penny, effectively nullifying the king's veto.
Thomas Jefferson later drafted Bill Number 82 establishing religious freedom, declaring that "Almighty God hath created the mind free" and that no person should be compelled to support any religious institution. The bill repeatedly failed until 1786, when James Madison finally pushed Jefferson's Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom through the General Assembly, disestablishing the Anglican Church.
When the Constitutional Convention began in Philadelphia in May 1787, religious freedom remained contentious.
