The Philosophical Legacy and Caesar's Assassination

At age sixty, Cicero embarked on an extraordinary period of literary productivity that would become one of Rome's most valuable legacies to posterity. Beginning in 46 BC, he produced a comprehensive summary of Greek philosophical thought from Plato to his own day. Though claiming no originality ("I only supply the words, and I have plenty of those"), Cicero proved himself a popularizer of genius whose works would preserve classical thought through Europe's Dark and Middle Ages when knowledge of Greek disappeared. With Caesar's autocracy blocking his political career, Cicero turned to writing "from morning to night," producing more in the short time since the Republic's collapse than during all the years of its existence. In summer 46, Cicero launched his ambitious project to present Greek philosophy comprehensively in Latin. By 44 BC, he had completed an impressive corpus including "Hortensius" (advocating philosophy's usefulness), "Academic Treatises" (examining theories of knowledge), "On Supreme Good and Evil" (evaluating ethical systems), "Conversations at Tusculum" (addressing happiness amid suffering), "The Nature of the Gods," "Foretelling the Future," and "Destiny." In his "Academic Treatises," Cicero defended the skeptical position of the New Academy, emphasizing probability over certainty. He also justified writing philosophy in Latin, arguing he was enriching the language-indeed, terms he coined like qualitas, moralis and essentia evolved into "quality," "moral" and "essence." "Conversations at Tusculum," written while recovering from Tullia's death, offered practical advice for living well despite misfortune. Death, Cicero argued, should not be feared, and mental suffering can be overcome through philosophical detachment-"The whole life of the philosopher is a preparation for death." As Caesar consolidated his victory in 45 BC, respectable opinion expected him to restore the constitution. His policy of clemency toward former enemies initially suggested this might happen, but he soon made clear his intention to maintain strong executive authority. Former enemies like Brutus and Cassius withdrew their support as they realized the Republic would not return. The Lupercalia festival failed to quash kingship rumors and instead accelerated the conspirators' plans. Cassius recruited Marcus Brutus, the plot's most celebrated member. Despite accumulating honors, Caesar was depressed and his health deteriorating. He dismissed his bodyguards saying, "There is no fate worse than being continuously under guard." The conspiracy included government insiders-Praetors Cassius and Brutus, future Consul Decimus Brutus, and possibly Antony himself. They chose March 15th at Pompey's theater for the assassination. After the frenzied attack (where only one of many wounds proved fatal), the conspirators fled to the Capitol while Caesar's body lay abandoned for hours before being carried home by three slave boys.

The Final Battle for the Republic

The two years following Caesar's assassination are history's best documented, though motives remain murky amid the confusion. Critics faulted the conspirators for having no plans beyond the killing itself-they viewed the assassination more as sacred ritual than political strategy, assuming the Republic would automatically resume functioning once the tyrant was removed. Cicero was thrilled by Caesar's assassination, writing congratulations to one of the conspirators. Meeting with them at the Capitol on March 15, he advised seizing the initiative by immediately calling a Senate meeting. The conspirators, proceduralists to the core, fatally hesitated-a mistake Cicero never let them forget. Antony, realizing his life wasn't in danger, spent the night securing his position. Lepidus brought his legion into the Forum while Antony retrieved Caesar's papers and money from Calpurnia. At the Senate meeting on March 17 (which the conspirators avoided), Antony cleverly asked whether declaring Caesar a tyrant would invalidate his appointments. Self-interest immediately concentrated minds-Senators protested against losing their positions. A compromise emerged: Caesar's acts would stand while the conspirators would receive immunity. Caesar's funeral on March 20 became a flashpoint. The conspirators, sensing danger, remained locked in their houses. In the Forum, Caesar's body lay on an ivory couch before a temporary chapel modeled on the Temple of Venus. The ceremony reached its climax when a wax effigy of Caesar was mechanically rotated to display his twenty-three wounds. The crowd erupted in grief and rage. They burned down the recently rebuilt Senate House and created an impromptu pyre in the Forum where Caesar was cremated. In late April, Caesar's heir arrived in Italy, setting the stage for a dramatic power struggle. Octavian had been born during Cicero's consulship in 63 to a respectable provincial family. When news of Caesar's assassination reached him, Octavian rejected his family's advice to renounce his inheritance. Landing at Brundisium, he made contact with troops there who enthusiastically received him as Caesar's son. He boldly began using Caesar's name, publicly asserting himself as the Dictator's political heir. On his journey north from Brundisium, Octavian was welcomed by crowds of soldiers, freedmen and former slaves of Caesar. In Naples, Balbus met him before he continued to his stepfather's villa at Puteoli, where Cicero happened to be staying. Though Cicero initially received the young man cordially, he quickly recognized the danger, writing to Atticus: "My judgment is that he cannot be a good citizen. There are too many around him. They threaten death to our friends and call the present state of affairs intolerable." Cicero's return to Rome on August 31 drew crowds reminiscent of his return from exile thirteen years earlier. Though he commanded no legions, his influence had grown. As one of the few senior statesmen of ability left in a depleted oligarchy, he represented the best of the old Republic at a time when people feared its collapse. When Antony called a Senate meeting the day after Cicero's return to propose new honors for Caesar, Cicero avoided attending by pleading exhaustion. Furious, Antony attacked him viciously, even threatening to demolish his home. On September 2, Cicero responded with the first of his "Philippics" against Antony, speeches that would earn Brutus's admiration for their newfound firmness. The alliance between Antony and Octavian quickly collapsed. Antony, recognizing his diminishing Senate support as his consulship neared its end, moved to secure Italian Gaul from Decimus Brutus. In early October, he departed for Brundisium to collect four legions from Macedonia. While Antony was away, Octavian illegally raised a private army in Campania, offering veterans 2,000 sesterces each-five times Antony's offer of 400. Facing this impasse, Octavian made an agonizing decision to ally with the Republican leadership he despised. On October 31, he wrote to Cicero offering to lead the Republican cause against Antony, seeking legitimacy for his illegal army in exchange. Cicero received the letter at his villa in Puteoli, writing excitedly to Atticus: "He has great schemes afoot. So it looks to me as though in a few days' time we shall be in arms. But whom are we to follow? Think of his name; think of his age." Cicero attended a well-attended Senate meeting on December 20, delivering his third Philippic. He boldly declared Antony an enemy of the state and argued for regularizing Octavian's private army, referring to him by his patronymic and declaring "Caesar on his own initiative has liberated the Republic." The Senate accepted most of Cicero's proposals, recognizing Octavian's army and confirming all provincial governors in their posts, though they refused to formally outlaw Antony.

January 43 opened with ominous signs - damaged temples, an epidemic, and Cicero's shattered statue of Minerva. The Senate met to address the crisis, with new Consuls Hirtius and Pansa taking a moderate stance. When negotiation with Antony was proposed, Cicero delivered his fifth Philippic against it, praising Octavian as "this heaven-sent boy" and securing him Propraetorian status. Battle commenced at Mutina in April. Though Antony initially wounded Pansa and prevailed, Hirtius's arrival turned the tide. A week later, they defeated Antony again, forcing him to flee north. Rome celebrated, with Cicero momentarily triumphant. However, both consuls' deaths from battle wounds created a devastating power vacuum. Pansa's troops joined Octavian, who refused to pursue Antony, while Lepidus, Plancus, and Pollio aligned with Antony. By August, Octavian marched on Rome with eight legions and secured the consulship through military pressure. He then joined Antony and Lepidus to form the Second Triumvirate, ordering proscriptions of over 130 senators and 2,000 equites. Despite Octavian's reported resistance, Cicero was included. Cicero fled toward Macedonia but reached only his villa near Formiae. Amid ill omens of persistent crows, he was betrayed by Quintus's freedman Philologus. Military Tribune Popillius Laenas and centurion Herennius found him on a wooded path. Cicero faced them with dignity, quoting Euripides before his execution. After three sword strokes, his head and hands were severed. His legacy endured through Tiro, who published his speeches and wrote his biography. Cicero's son Marcus, despite his flaws, became consul in 30 BC and announced Antony's death from the same platform where his father's head had been displayed. Years later, Augustus found his grandson reading Cicero and, after reading it himself, acknowledged him as "an eloquent man and a patriot" - a quiet testament to Cicero's lasting influence on Western thought.
