Beyond evolutionary connections, humans have profound emotional ties to water. It delights and inspires us, consoles and intimidates us, creates feelings of awe, peace, and joy. When humans encounter water-seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, or touching it-we feel something. These "instinctual and emotional responses... occur separately from rational and cognitive responses," as urban planning professor Steven C. Bourassa noted, arising from our brain's oldest parts before cognitive responses even form.
Though academia once dismissed emotional connections to water as unscientific "fuzzy stuff," today's cognitive neuroscientists understand emotions drive virtually every decision we make. Using tools like EEGs, MRIs, and fMRIs, scientists now examine brain processes underlying our connection to water-research with significant applications for health, real estate, creativity, childhood development, urban planning, addiction and trauma treatment, conservation, business, politics, religion, and architecture.

While fMRI has become the preferred method for measuring brain function over the past twenty years, it has limitations. It measures blood flow rather than actual neuronal activity, has poor temporal resolution compared to EEG, and confines subjects to sterile lab environments rather than natural settings. Humans are powerfully drawn to the color blue, which is overwhelmingly chosen as the favorite color worldwide. Blue evokes feelings of trust, calm, and credibility-qualities that explain why companies like Facebook, IBM, and American Express incorporate it into their logos. Studies show blue light enhances neural connectivity between voice processing areas and emotional centers in the brain, reduces perceived pain, and can even prevent suicide attempts. The color's positive psychological effects may stem from our evolutionary development on a planet dominated by blue skies and waters.

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Chase works as a lifeguard trainer, develops swimming programs for the Special Olympics, serves as an ocean advocate, and coaches youth in American Samoa to become swimming and ocean culture mentors. His experience demonstrates how a deep relationship with water can inspire both personal achievement and service to others.
Swimming's popularity stems from its unique properties: buoyancy, resistance, and pressure. The human body, being mostly water with air-filled lungs, weighs only about 10 pounds in water instead of 200 on land. Water's resistance-600 times that of air-makes swimming excellent exercise while its pressure forces blood toward the heart and lungs, improving circulation. Though seemingly modern, these boards represent our most ancient watercraft, similar to what our ancestors used 50,000 years ago to reach Australia. Modern life's "always on" mentality creates toxic stress that damages multiple body systems, impairs brain function, and ultimately increases mortality risk. What if Ishmael was right? What if time near water could be as effective as antidepressants? What if doctors prescribed "two waves, a beach walk, and flowing river" for stress and illness?
Research by Sands Research revealed that water images evoke positive emotions and sustained attention while reducing cognitive engagement-functioning as a "mental rest period." Neuroscientist Catherine Franssen and surfer Joao De Macedo further distinguish between Blue Mind and Red Mind states. Red Mind is an "edgy high" characterized by stress, anxiety, fear and sometimes anger-a physiological stress response evolved for survival. This cocktail of norepinephrine, dopamine and cortisol heightens senses and provides bursts of power useful in extreme situations like big-wave surfing. While necessary for survival, this same stress response activates inappropriately for non-threatening modern stressors like bills, keeping stress hormones elevated constantly. Urban environments bombard our already overtaxed brains with thousands of stimuli, forcing mental overdrive that creates chronic stress. We compound this with caffeine, sugar, bright screens, and fast music, creating an exhaustion factory-a downward Red Mind spiral.
Environmental psychologists Stephen and Rachel Kaplan identified "directed-attention fatigue" and theorized two attention types: directed (requiring energy and focus) and involuntary (requiring little mental effort). Natural settings engage involuntary attention, allowing directed attention to rest. Heroes on the Water (HOW) has helped over three thousand wounded warriors and veterans recover through kayak fishing since 2007. Founder Jim Dolan explains that kayak fishing provides triple therapy: physical (paddling and fishing), occupational (learning lifelong skills), and mental (freedom and relaxation on water). "When I'm out there on the water all the crap in my life goes away," Dolan says, believing veterans experience the same relief.
The healing power of water extends to addiction recovery. Surfing instructor Van Curaza discovered this when surfing helped him overcome drug and alcohol addiction. Programs like FleaHab (run by pro surfer and recovering addict Darryl "Flea" Virostko) and Surfing to Recovery use water activities to "replace the high of drugs with the endorphins of exercise."

As psychologist William James wrote, this "mystical consciousness" is a form of awareness entirely different from our typical waking state, and "no account of the universe in its totality can be final which leaves these other forms of consciousness quite disregarded." We experience this connection in nature, during prayer, when caring for others, or marveling at sunrise or stars-reminding us we're part of something larger.
Scientists studying the neurological maps of creativity have found that during creative flow, the brain's executive function decreases while areas associated with emotion, motivation, language and motor skills become more active. This shift from directed attention to a looser, "uncensored" mental state enables novel associations that drive spontaneous creativity. Water environments provide ideal conditions for accessing this creative state. Many artists' colonies developed near water-in Provincetown, Montauk, Giverny, and Cornwall. Writers like Benjamin Franklin, Edmund Rostand and Vladimir Nabokov wrote in bathtubs. At the Blue Mind Summit, psychiatrist Helen Riess demonstrated how empathy works through our neurological systems, showing a powerful video of albatrosses dying from ingested plastic waste. This visceral connection changed her behavior forever.
Mirror neurons, discovered about twenty years ago, reveal how humans are wired to connect-we literally mirror the physical and emotional processes occurring in others. Studies show we respond to others' emotions even before conscious awareness, demonstrating our deep physiological synchronization. While empathy creates connection and altruism, it can also produce emotional distress when witnessing suffering.
Nature inspires feelings of connection to something larger and more transcendent than ourselves. Studies show that people who spend time in nature experience greater feelings of awe, vitality, purpose, and positive emotions. Those who view nature scenes become more concerned with prosocial goals and more willing to give to others.
What creates this connection? First is nature's beauty-increasingly exotic in our Red Mind world. Our response to nature's aesthetics runs deep, engaging all senses with novel sounds, smells, flora and tastes. Second is nature's grandeur, which puts us in proper perspective. As neuroscientist Dan Siegel noted while watching ocean waves as a teenager, these eternal cycles would continue long after he was gone.
In studies, people experiencing beautiful natural scenes report feelings of awe, love, and contentment, often agreeing they "felt small," "felt the presence of something greater," and "felt connected with the world." Unlike the negative lack of control we feel in our stressed lives, in nature we experience a positive lack of control-recognizing something magnificent that exists both with and without us.
Compassion represents a crucial shift from merely feeling others' pain to actively wanting to heal it. Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard demonstrated this neurologically during fMRI studies led by Tania Singer. When focusing on suffering children, Ricard initially activated his brain's pain circuits, quickly feeling emotionally exhausted. However, when he shifted to compassion meditation, his brain "turned off" pain circuits and activated positive regions associated with love and reward. The emotional distance disappeared, replaced by "natural and boundless love."
As an ocean advocate, my proudest story began with a small piece of blue glass. In 2009, I handed blue marbles to audience members at the New England Aquarium. At the end of my presentation, I asked them to hold the marble at arm's length-showing how Earth looks from a million miles away: a small, blue, fragile, watery dot. When held close to the eye, it creates the sensation of being underwater.
I asked each person to think of someone they're grateful for-perhaps someone who loves water or helps keep our waters clean-and give them the marble as a thank you. This simple gesture of gratitude, along with sharing what the marble represents, created a powerful ripple effect. The Blue Marbles Project went viral, with nearly a million people giving marbles within eighteen months. Blue marbles reached the hands of celebrities, scientists, and everyday heroes, creating meaningful moments of connection and appreciation for our blue planet.
The Blue Marbles Project spread globally with no real budget but with help from friends. Blue marbles have reached notable figures like James Cameron, Jane Goodall, Harrison Ford, Edward O. Wilson, the Dalai Lama, and even the CEO of British Petroleum. The project inspired personal connections, like a young man who turned his bar mitzvah into an "Ocean Mitzvah" and a woman who used a marble to thank her sister for twelve years of coastal conservation work. The project expanded to schools, where children created packages with recycled maps to send marbles worldwide, tracking their journey to Paris, Berlin, Rome, the Sahara, and beyond. The rules are simple: the marble must be blue, you pass it along with gratitude, and optionally share your story. The humble glass spheres create powerful emotional connections-even making business executives tear up during a corporate keynote. Each marble symbolizes our connection to water and to each other, reminding us that from space, Earth is just a small blue dot where everyone we've ever known has lived.
