Rather than granting Abecassis a quick death, Grunbeld methodically dismembers him before engulfing him in flames-a fitting end for the man who tortured him and his friends as children. The dragon's rampage continues to the royal castle in Nordcapity, where King Haakon sits on his throne, soon to face the fire dragon crashing through his chamber wall. The fire dragon's destruction of Tudor bases throughout the grand duchy becomes legendary among Nordcapity's people, who believe the dragon saved their nation. They don't realize that their salvation came at the cost of Grunbeld's humanity and the lives of those he loved most. Years later, a giant named Grunbeld, called the Flame Dragon Knight for his towering frame and fiery red hair and eyes, journeys through Kushan-occupied Midland. Guided only by Benedikte's final words to "Search for the Hawk of Light," Grunbeld contemplates his destiny and what enemies he will face, believing it all rests "in the palm of God's hand." This epilogue connects Grunbeld's origin story to the larger Berserk narrative, showing how he eventually joins the reborn Band of the Hawk under Griffith (the "Hawk of Light"). The tragic irony is that in following Benedikte's dying words, Grunbeld aligns himself with another figure who sacrificed those closest to him for power-creating a parallel between their paths. Grunbeld's transformation from honorable warrior to monstrous apostle represents the central tragedy of his character-in his quest for vengeance against those who wronged him, he ultimately becomes something far worse than his enemies. His story serves as a dark reflection on how the pursuit of revenge can corrupt even the noblest soul, transforming the avenger into the very monster they once fought against.
