출생: October 11, 1884 – New York City, New York, United States
Eleanor Roosevelt was an American diplomat, activist, and writer who expanded the role of First Lady through advocacy on civil rights, labor, and social welfare. She chaired the UN Commission on Human Rights, helping shape the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and reached millions through her long-running “My Day” newspaper column.
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 11, 1884, into a prominent family whose wealth did not shield her from instability. Her father, Elliott Roosevelt, struggled with alcoholism, and both parents died before she was ten, leaving her to be raised largely by relatives. A decisive early influence came at Allenswood Academy in London, where the headmistress Marie Souvestre encouraged intellectual independence, social awareness, and confidence. That education helped transform a shy, self-conscious girl into a woman with a strong sense of public duty. In 1905 she married her distant cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt, and while the marriage placed her at the center of American political life, it was also marked by strain. A major turning point came in the early 1920s, after Franklin was stricken with polio and after Eleanor discovered his affair with Lucy Mercer. Rather than retreat, she built an independent political identity through reform organizations, labor advocacy, women’s networks, and public speaking.
