The Friendship Formula is a framework developed by former FBI behavioral analyst Jack Schafer that defines connection as the sum of Proximity, Frequency, Duration, and Intensity. Proximity involves being in the same physical space as someone, while frequency and duration refer to how often and how long you spend with them. By simply "existing" near someone consistently over time, you allow their brain to recognize you as a non-threat, which creates a foundation of trust before a single word is even spoken.

To signal that you are a "friend" rather than a "foe" during a territory scan, you should use the eyebrow flash, the head tilt, and a genuine smile. The eyebrow flash is a quick up-and-down movement that signals you aren't a threat, while tilting your head exposes the carotid artery, a vulnerability signal that suggests honesty and kindness. Finally, a real smile—one that crinkles the eyes—is essential because the human brain is highly adept at spotting fake or forced expressions.

The Golden Rule of Friendship states that if you want people to like you, you must make them feel good about themselves. Instead of trying to be the most interesting or impressive person in the room, you should focus on making the other person feel smart, heard, and funny. When individuals walk away from a conversation feeling better about their own self-worth, they naturally associate those positive emotions with you and will want to seek out your company again.

One of the most effective ways to test rapport is through a "lead and follow" exercise involving mirroring. You begin by subtly mimicking the other person's body language, such as crossing your legs when they do. After a period of time, you change your own position; if the other person mirrors your new posture within 20 to 30 seconds, it indicates that a psychological bridge has been built. Other signs of rapport include "preening" gestures, such as someone picking lint off your sleeve, or an open body posture with limbs uncrossed.

When dealing with an angry person, it is important to recognize that they are in a "fight-or-flight" mode and cannot think logically. To de-escalate the situation, you should use empathic statements to reflect their emotions back to them and allow them to vent until their frustration levels drop. Once they are calmer, you can use presumptive statements to guide them toward a resolution, giving them an "illusion of choice" so they feel in control of the outcome while you lead them toward a fix.
