Cornelius (Con) and Jeremiah (Jerry) Delaney were members of the 1st Battalion, Cork No. 1 Brigade of the IRA. A grenade accidentally detonated, killing young volunteers William Mulcahy and Denis Christopher Morrissey. In December 1920, they imposed Martial Law on Cork, giving the military the power to execute people for aiding rebels. They also published threats in local newspapers warning citizens that sheltering "rebels" would lead to their homes being burned. "Official" reprisals involved the deliberate burning of houses in towns like Midleton following IRA ambushes, a tactic intended to break the community's support for the movement.
