    Abstract This chapter reviews normative and descriptive aspects of decision making. Expected Utility Theory (EUT), the dominant normative theory of decision making, is often thought to provide a relatively poor description of how people actually make decisions. Prospect Theory has been proposed as a more descriptively valid alternative. The failure of EUT seems at least partly due to the fact that people’s preferences are often unstable and subject to various influences from the method of elicitation, decision context, and goals. In novel situations, people need to infer their preferences from various cues such as the context and their memories and emotions. Through repeated experience with particular decisions and their outcomes, these inferences can become more stable, resulting in behavior that is more consistent with EUT. Keywords Decision making, preference, expected utility theory, prospect theory, multiattribute decisions, decisions from experience

    The psychology of choice explores how human behavior is driven by more than just rational thought. While we often view ourselves as logical, our brains function more like a fast and frugal machine rather than a supercomputer. This means we frequently rely on shortcuts and emotional pulls rather than weighing every pro and con with surgical precision. Understanding these underlying patterns helps explain why our decision-making process is often messy and unpredictable.

    The framing effect demonstrates that our choices are heavily influenced by how information is presented rather than just the facts themselves. For example, a person is more likely to choose yogurt labeled ninety percent fat-free over one labeled ten percent fat, even though they are identical. As discussed in The Psychology of Choice, changing the frame can effectively change the person's perception and their ultimate decision, highlighting the power of invisible cognitive strings.

    Research into cognitive frameworks suggests that humans are not the high-functioning, rational robots we imagine ourselves to be. Instead of using surgical precision to make choices, we are constantly influenced by social pressures, hidden emotions, and the way information is framed. These factors exist long before we even encounter a choice, proving that the rational mind is often bypassed by faster, more instinctive processes that prioritize efficiency over perfect logic.

    役立つ情報やアイデアを 8〜15 分のポッドキャスト風音声にぎゅっとまとめて聞けるのが最高です。ポッドキャストは余計な話が多くて苦手でしたが、これは無駄を全部そぎ落としてくれます。

    @BeFreed user

    博士課程の仕上げの段階で、なじみのない資料を大量に読む必要があります… BeFreed ならプロンプトを入力するだけで、アプリが資料を探して音声ポッドキャストを作ってくれます。BeFreed のほうが NotebookLM よりも流れがスムーズだと感じます。

    朝食を作りながら、散歩しながら、通勤しながら聞くものを YouTube でよく探していましたが、BeFreed は広告も余計な話もなしで、もっと的を絞った聞き方をさせてくれます!

    @BeFreed user

    このプラットフォームの一番の魅力は、その万能さです。扱えないテーマは文字どおりひとつもありません。何を投げても応えてくれます… 制限がまったくないのに約束をきちんと果たしてくれる学習ツールには、なかなか出会えません。
